It’s not so much about what high school you attended although in my opinion I believe that colleges can be a little biased when it comes to the prestige of an applicant’s high school. But, it all comes down to how much you’ve taken advantage of the resources provided by your high school; be it AP/IB courses, extra-curricular activities, opportunities etc. Basically, how hard-working/pro-active you were during your four years of high school is what’s going to determine whether or not you should be considered.

Hope that helps.

Your GC will be asked for a school profile that will include the top GPA and
the typical course load. They will also mark whether you took the toughest
work load possible.

Given the few minutes an admissions officer is going to scan your and your
friends course load and GPA it is up to you to believe how they will
differentiate between them.

If you are at a top public school your app will have some advantages over
most private schools that are not name brand (Exteter like category).

I know SUNY Stony Brook don’t care that much about high school. I have many friends that went got high grades in easy high schools get in. Those that got medicore grades from harder and more well-known high schools were waitlisted.

I’ve been wondering the same thing, actually. I transfered away from my home campus to attend an IB Academy, and people are terribly competitive, which was foreign to me for a good part of my life. I have a weighted “academic average” of a 5.06 (on a 6.0 scale), and an unweighted GPA of 3.8. My GPA wouldn’t change much at my home campus. It might be a 4.0, but that isn’t too different… However, I’m sure my academic average would be several points higher, and my class rank would be higher as well. I’m almost regretting participating in IB. -_-

Most colleges have a regional reader as the first reviewer who knows your high school very well, what is offered and which grades are the most competitive for your high school. That said, the standards will also vary based on the opportunity in your high school and area.
