How Much Effect Does Parents Not Attending College Have On My Chances?

I am in a dilemna because I am being told to apply to a few schools which would most certainly be reaches, but I am told becasue my parents did not attend college, that I am the kind of student many of these schools love........the first in a family to graduate from college. I dont' want to waste time or money on schools which basically I don't have much of a chance with.....does anyone who know about this, want to comment and give me their advice? Thanks!

It's a slight nudge in the overall scheme of things. However, your transcript/scores and school scattergrams are a better indicator of what schools are "reaches" vs. matches and safeties. Is your guidance counselor any assistance with this?

Keep in mind that the most selective colleges get lots of first generation applicants. Back when I was applying, I left the spots blank on the application for my parents' education. After reading on CC that we should write "none" or "not applicable" in these spots, I panicked and emailed admissions officers at the various schools to which I applied. All responded to the effect of "It's OK. We get plenty of these applicants and assume no higher education if the spot is left blank." I was rather put out, because I had been under the impression that it was a significant factor.
