How much emphasis do law schools place on volunteering

If someone didn't do any volunteering for a year and instead travelled around the united states. Would that hurt his application to top law schools a lot?

Also which is better for law schools, volunteer work or interships? Generally speaking of course.

It depends on what you do with that volunteering. If got really involved in the group and helped it more effectively meet its goals then that is something law schools want in a candidate. However, just volunteering doesn’t add a great deal to your file. If you have a prestigious internship then it will likely outweigh volunteering for a number of hours. If traveling around the U.S. helped you gain a different perspective then that will be just as important as volunteer work. However, what exactly did you do whilst traveling around America? Was it for some organization?
