In the activities section of the common app. Do admissions officers really look at the order of what you list. I know it should be in order of importance to me, but there are 3 or 4 in the top that are all pretty equal to me so I was wondering how much weight is put solely on how I rank my EC's.

Ive been wondering the same thing. Free bump for you :)

Also I have a question about reporting hours. This is my “problem” although it isn’t really a problem. For example, in debate we only have 1 meeting per week that is 1.5 hours long. However we have 7 full day tournaments throughout the year, and each is literally like 11 hours. Then on top of that in each of those weeks there is a tournament, I spend about 10 hours that week prepping cases and stuff. The problem is that if I just add up the total hours I spend doing debate and divide by the weeks, it comes out to like 7 hours per week. In reality I dont spend 7 hours per week on debate every week, it just happens like that, are colleges alright with that.

The answer you’ll get to your original question probably varies person by person. If I personally had to read a list of activities a few times, I’d probably read them all once, attempt a second reading, but after that, I might read the first few and skim the rest. Just consider this as you add more.

As for your debate group, I would say first figure out how many total hours you spend with this group throughout the year with math. So you already have that 1.5 hours * however many weeks you meet. Then do 10 or 11 hours * however many tournaments you do a year. Add these numbers up and then divide by the total number of weeks per year that you are reporting on the common app. This should give you a good average. Although this will give you more than your normal 1.5, it also accounts for the tournament time.

I did this kind of math for a few of my activities since they also have regular meeting times as well as more “intense” weeks. Oh, and I’m kind of bad at explaining math, so if I was confusing or messed anything up, please feel free to correct me.

I got you nineum, thats what I did to figure out my hours, I just wanted to make sure this didn’t seem ridiculous, because obviously I don’t spend 7 hours a week on debate, just some weeks I spend over 20 hours on debate. I guess that all just gets averaged out in the end.
