I seriously need to hire some financial expert or something to understand my situation.
This is all so overwhelming.

EFC= ~$24000

Provost’s Grant= $4000
Tisch Scholarship= $12000
J. Eckhouse Scholarship= $4000
Federal Work-Study Eligibility= $4000
Direct Stafford Loan= $3500
Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan= $2000
Direct PLUS Loan= $30,483

Actually, this is better than I was expecting considering my EFC. But NYU isn’t my first choice, and so far I’ve received an equivalent offer from USC (Half-tuition grant), which is my first choice. Hopefully I’ll win some random Cinematic Arts scholarship! Plus, you have to take into account how expensive the cost of living is in NYC, and I’m from Cali, so going home for the holidays would be costly. But I’m just going to have to sit tight and wait the next couple of weeks to get all my financial aid awards together before I make a decision.

Your package must have some $ that is merit based. What are your stats?

CAS Scholarship: 11,000
Provost’s Grant: 1,000
University Grant: 3,620
Expected ACG Grant: 750
Expected FSEOG Grant: 4,000
Expected Pell Grant: 5,550
Estimated New York State TAP: 5,000
Federal Work-Study Eligibility: 4,000
Direct Stafford Loan: 3,500
Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: 2,000
Direct PLUS Loan: 15,646

Total Awards: 56,066.

Kinda scared about the prospect of loans… but at this point I’ll still need to decide between NYU and Georgetown. So excited to have been accepted though! :)

That is impressive. How did you get a presidential scholarship, full ride without applying for NYU FA?

A full ride to NYU… now that’s something. $250,000 plus in financial aid; the student must have been perfect (or else had connections within NYU).

Do you think it’s worth it?

CAS scholarship: 11,000
Provest:1000

@shinywing

You have gotten a better package than most if you don’t count the work study as bad. Practically only around $84,000 in loans. That’s $20,000 less than most (for the four years total) have gotten.

so I have to pay those $84000 back to NYU AFTER I graduate, right?

I thought that is how it worked, but I’m not completely sure now, shinywing. I would call and ask.

Do my parents have to pay those 16116 BEFORE i graudate???

I would say after you graduate. Call to find out for sure, though.

It is after. They usually have a 6 or 12 month grace period after graduation.

All federal loans are after graduation.
Private loans as well.

Do I still have to pay if I plan to go to grad school after I finish undergrad?

All loans SHOULD be paid after you are done with all of your education.

So, all loans are paid after grad school.

I’m going to have tons and tons of loans.

But, for law school, some law firms will pay part of your tuition if you work for them through some program.

And, there are loan forgiveness programs if you teach, do medical stuff, or do non-profit law practicing.

Since I’m doing law, I’ll probably do a loan forgiveness program. Basically I cant make over a set amount of money but they cover my debt.

Look into programs like that for whatever field you are going into.

"Look into programs like that for whatever field you are going into. "

I think I can find a nice Cinema Studies loan forgiveness program, no? :P

Haha. Well obviously not every field ;)

Repayment for parent plus loans begin after disbursement, but you can opt to have it defered till after the the student graduates. They do not autonatically defer them, you have to request it once you have applied and been approved.

NYU is essentially a school for the affluent. They expect people to pay for most/all of their college costs. No one with big need should bother considering it a dream school.

For NYU to put sizable Plus loans in low income families’ FA packages is awful…NYU isn’t coming close to meeting need, when need is filled with a big fat loan.
