I completely agree about the loans; but they’re not that bad for families who have no other debt. My family, for example, has very little debt, so taking on a one-time loan to invest in my education (the only child going to college), isn’t much of a problem; we can actually do it, and pay it off in 10 years. And this is coming from a family with a relatively low income.

If there was no scholarship information in our acceptance packets, does that mean we’re not getting any scholarships, or are some sent out later?

If you applied for FA and you didn’t receive it with your acceptance packet, then it will be coming soon. Worst-case scenario: are you sure you submitted your FAFSA?

didn’t recieve any scholarship info in my packet, didn’t apply for financial aid, but got into Stern with good ECs, SATs, etc.
do they tell us later?

WOW for all the lameness of NYU’s FA, I did pretty well:

Stern Scholarship: 20,000
Other scholarships: 15,897
Grants: around 5,100
Work Study: 4,000
Loans (altogether): 10,484

Total: 56,511

Going by this, going to NYU would be cheaper than going to my top state school. Go figure. However, I don’t think I’m going to NYU, looking at it now, NYU is not the perfect fit. Good luck to the rest of y’all!

Question: I have around 18,000 in loans from NYU financial aid. However, I have 18,000 in my own college fund. That isn’t factored into financial aid though, right (it wasn’t on the list). So does this mean I can just pay of the 18,000 loan with the money in my account??

Just got my package today. I got 15k in scholarships from NYU and the rest were loans and work-study. It sucks, because I really wanted to go. But on the bright side, I was at least accepted. And I find it a little funny that I got a scholarship from NYU but not from Boston where I think that I would have a better shot. Congrats on those that can afford to go!

It isn’t bad, considering they could have given me nothing. But NYU expects my parents to take out 31k in loans a year, which is more than my mom makes a year or about 2k less than my dad makes a year. I was surprised and happy they gave me money but sad because I knew I couldn’t go.

NYU is a better “deal” lately due to every unfortunate thing that has happened to NYC and WS since 911.
Compare to many Boston schools, it is the “best deal” for the long run if you know what I mean.

I got ~$22,000 from scholarships, $4000 work study, and the rest in loans.

I have no clue what my EFC is or if this is a good deal or not. my parents are both away on vacation and don’t even know I got in, so i’m trying not to get TOO excited until I talk it all over with them.

Also just wanted to say that my NYU FA was actually way better than Fordham’s (where I only got $12k in scholarships and a $5k loan)… just thought that was kind of weird.

All I got from NYU was a 1,000 scholarship. And I’m kind of above average, or at least I thought…and now I see all these 15k scholarships. I’m jealous!! There’s no way I can go when they expect my family to take out 50K in loans.

You are not alone. I too am jealous of others who received more. My daughter got a $4,000 scholarship and that was it! That represents 6% of the cost of film school. The other schools she got into are offering scholarships and grants that range from 20% to 40% of her education.
Congrats. to those who are going to NYU and who got nice packages.
Unfortunately, my daughter will not be joining you and it will be NYU’s lose.

NYU would have been doing many of you a much bigger favor by just denying you. Granted, most kids and families on CC are smart enough to know that $100K+ in loans for an NYU degree doesn’t make sense. But I am sure some low income kids are going to be duped into taking on such an enormous amount of debt that they will be regretting their decision to say “YES” to NYU for decades to come. That is almost criminal in my mind.

The only school that comes close to being worth the debt is Stern, I believe. I may just be talking as a biased individual, seeing as I got accepted there, but it is no doubt the best school at NYU and one of the best in the country (when it comes to undergraduate business programs).
