My S was so thrilled to be accepted to Music business program, a dream come true. Sadly he will not be attending as no scholarships were offered. FAFSA claims we have no need so basically he was offered all loans. At 55k/yr he is smart enough to know he does not want to graduate with this amount of debt. He received nice scholarships from all the other schools he applied to. NEU 12k, American 15k, BU 12k, Univ Delaware 15k, TCNJ 10k. Although NYU was top pick he will not attend. A very sad day. Truly the middle income population gets the least amount of aid at NYU. My son applied to 12 schools and received scholarships to all but NYU.

Tisch is a great school but there are an awful lot of Tisch grads who are going to struggle for years to make a decent living in the arts, if they ever do. I would agree that the averages say the best return on investment would be through Stern, but I’d also look long and hard at the idea of accruing 100-200K in debt if you have an affordable alternative at a solid business school.

FA Total $56,066

my questions are…
Q1: Do I receive this FA award just for one year?(2010~2011)
Q2: If I’m going to NYU, I will be a 7-year dental student(BA/DDS),then can I receive $56,066(per year) for 7 years?
Q3: For the Loans…do I have to pay for the loans right after I graduate from NYU?

hey everyone. I was accepted to Stern with an EFC = 0
my package was:
NYU Scholarships/grants - 12,500
Government Aid - 10,250
Work Study - 4,000
Student/Parent Loans - 30,000

okay, so I know that NYU is not great with financial aid, but they expect my mom to take out a loan for over 24,000 a year when she only has a part time job that makes HALF of that in a year. I really want to attend here if not accepted to my first-choice. Do you think I would have a chance if I petitioned the office for more aid?? Has anyone done this before successfully?

@upenngirl I think someone mentioned on here (not sure where) that they (or a friend) petitioned and they got 10k more. I think this is an unusually large amount to get from NYU, but you never know what you’ll get. You should try anyway. Never know : )

Thanks mwahzzz! That atleast gives me some hope – I mean, even if they gave me 5000 more a year, I would be able to graduate with 20000 less in debt.

You’re welcome. Good luck!

100K debt is a lot but a graduate from NYU makes a lot of money after a couple of years of working. Really. A friend graduated a few years ago is now making 100K+. The starting salary was like 67K.

^Did he/she go to Stern? lol Stern gives everyone a great job =]

@SAT2350
Q1 - Yes, you have to reapply for FA every year
Q2 - Depends, like I said, you have to reapply every year, your aid might change depending on any change of circumstances
Q3 - Depends on the loan, usually there is a ‘grace period’ of a few months (like 9 mnths for Federdal Perkins Loan and 6 for Federal Stafford, after which you begin payment)

Is there a way to find out your FA package online or do I have to wait for it to come in the mail? My acceptance package still hasn’t come and I’m freaking out, and it’s really going to make my decision.

Yours will come in the mail.

You cannot check the online financial stuff until May 1.

Question: There were some issues with my FAFSA, so I didn’t get my aid with the admissions packet, but things are fixed now and I was told to expect the aid letter in 1.5 weeks.

Will my aid be worse now than it would have been had everything been fine? Does NYU have a cap for how many kids get money?

I need as much as I can get.

D
Recieved MLK 25K
and J.Eckhouse Scholarship 8k
plus Provost Grant 8k
the rest was loans and workstudy
Could have been a lot worse.
Does anyone know what the Eckhouse Scholarship is for? She tried google and the NYU website with no luck.

@Kellannah that is a great package!

Thanks its better than we thought considering what people have said.

And I gues it doesn’t matter but she is going crazy trying to figure out what the J. Eckhouse Scholarship is for?

I guess she will have to call on Monday if no one knows.

Did anyone else not get a FA sheet in their acceptances package who DID apply for Financial aid? I’m kinda freaking out…

yeah, I called the financial aid office and he looked me up and told me they had just sent it yesterday, so if you filed the FASFA on time it should come soon

@treestree91, call and double check, because I didn’t either, and the girl was like “Oh, you never filed for FAFSA” even though I did it in February, so then she told me that they made a mistake and never put me on the list for financial aid.

I got my financial aid package yesterday. I was beginning to think it would never come.

LSP Scholarship- $16,000
Provost’s Grant- $1,000
Expected ACG Grant- $750
Expected FSEOG Grant- $4,000
Expected Pell Grant- $1,176
Work Study- $2000
Stafford loan- $3,500
Unsubsidezed Stafford loan- $2,000
PLUS Loan- $23,640

That PLUS loan at the end kinda makes me nervous, I don’t want to end up with over $100,000 in debt when I come out of undergraduate school…
