Dallas I’m 28 - not only am I older than most of my classmates, but my TAs too. lol

Its never to late to further your education.

@moochi
holy crap, i never knew about that program, of course i was young at the time, dam that was a smart game plan on your uncles part, tuition was way cheaper back then right? but even with that, u didn’t really need that texas tomorrow thing, i mean look at that list of grants you got, that should pretty much cover everything including housing

Moochie, what dorm type did you get at Dobie? If you end up as my roommate, I’m stealing your money. jk

Unsubsidized loans. EFC of 32k really sucks.

holy **** why two kay, how da hell do ppl get that high of a efc, are your parents lawyers or what lol?

No, my family makes a little under 100k a year. My dad works in finance and my mom is a social worker. I’m from Plano and live in a regular 250k house and drive regular Honda and Nissan cars. It’s people like me who REALLY get shafted by financial aid. We are upper middle class and (if my parents did not have a 529 savings plan) would never be able to afford UT. I am still taking out max unsub stafford loans each year to pay for school, and that doesn’t even cover tuition, yet alone housing. My dad had money in a 529 savings for me, but that started back in the 90’s when COA was insanely lower. I mean, tuition alone has doubled since 2002 (or so, something like that). No savings plan accounted for the massive increase in cost in the last decade or so. It has been paying for housing, but it will run dry after this year, my sophomore year.

man dude that sucks, makes me appreciate my lower class status a little more :\ ,i never would think students with parents who make a lot of money would struggle with college tuition too. u think with 100k a year, there may be something they can provide, not sure what kinds of things ur parents need to pay but dam it really sucks to be taking out loans, hopefully i won’t need to be doing that in the future

Is aid only based off of the FAFSA? My father is unemployed, yet my EFC is still unreasonably high (which disqualifies me for grants) I reckon because my mom owns a business, and Stafford Loans don’t quite cut it.

I need some grants man!

Fafsa is based off your parents income. IF your father is unemployed you should fill out the special circumstances forms.

Your father must have took out his 401k plan or something?

edit: i didnt see the part about your moms business.

I’m a non traditional student too at age 23. anyone know of places to look for grants/scholarships for someone like me? I have fastweb, but all i seem to qualify for are the random drawings that everyone can apply for :(. and if youre wondering, my efc is 0

FAFSA is based on both your income and your assets.

Jeptha we look to be in about the same boat. PM me and I can send you some of the external scholarship resources I’ve found - it’s sort of a pain because there’s not one clearinghouse to get to them, so be prepared to dig around a bit.
