when applying to a highly competitive college? my D is fluent in Spanish (plans to take the SAT II) and for HS she's taking French so she'll be studying 4 years of Frech ...so I wonder if her effort to study a third language would be of any advantage when applying for a top college? Thanks!

I think it only helps when it's obvious that your daughter has continued the language because she wants to/loves it, i.e. taking the language for four/five years. Many high schools nowadays have a 2 year or 3 year language requirement, so going past that would show dedication and therefore could possibly help for college. But seriously? I wouldn't worry about it.

I was just thinking because studying Spanish only would have been much easier for her, but she wouldn't be fluent in a 3rd language...so here she is taking a time consuming language, French, and going the hard way, so I wonder if selective college would take that into consideration or is something that they don't really care about (bilingual vs trilingual)...

I know 3 languages...holler. Arabic, English and Spanish...YAY for me!

I'm fluent in Swedish, French, and English (in that order) and am teaching myself Spanish. I wouldn't be surprised if knowing several languages helped me in admissions, but I really don't know how much.

hmmm...oh well, if it doesn't help much with college applications, at least it's nice to travel and speak the native's language...
