How much harder is it to get in when you apply Regular Decision?

Unfortunately, there was an issue with one of my teacher recs so I could not apply by the priority deadline. I am absolutely devastated, as UMD-CP is my dream school and I heard they fill up most of their spots during priority deadline. Where do your stats need to be to get accepted RD? (I have only taken honors and AP classes in high school and have a 3.75 GPA, top 10%, CR + M SAT 1360). I am a female hoping to major in Computer Science, and UMDCP has a fantastic CS program, and I fell in love with the school so I'm really hoping I'll get in!

Don’t hold your breath.

It’s true it’s harder to get in regular decision, and the response date is obviously later. If UMD is your dream schoo, and you don’t get in, do plan B. First, if you haven’t gotten 5s in your two AP Calc classes, you’d have to do MATH140 and MATH141 at UMD…a horrible proposition. Do some gen eds and your two Calcs that transfer at CC prior to coming. Then that is out of the way. You can also take some OOP comp sci courses, and Java courses, and attempt to place out of CMSC131 and CMSC132. My kid got in as a transfer student from CC in comp sci and loves it, but understand they don’t take any comp sci transfer classes, so you’d have to place out of several of them or you will be in a minimum of 7 semesters (or a summer). It is absolutely do-able, if UMD is the only school you want. But your stats seem pretty good…who knows…maybe a 50/50 shot?

I went on a tour and the guide (from admissions) mentioned that 90% of the class is filled with priority applicants.

That SAT seems a bit low… Plus it’s a bit late for the spring semester. I’d apply to a lot of schools if i were you, cast a wide net. On the other hand, the housing situation at UMD is pretty bad I think so that is a big drawback to it IMO, there are not enough rooms for the students being accepted. I am a transfer student so I am lowest priority and they said that the good chance is that I’ll never get an on-campus housing assignment in the 2 years i’ll be here, bummer.

Update: 2080 SAT.

“have to do MATH140 and MATH141 at UMD…a horrible proposition.”

Why is that? Sure they’re probably more difficult there but it will prepare you in the long run no?
