How much harder now is it to get into a UC due to budget cuts?

Because of the budget cuts are the chances of getting into a UC MUCH lower now or is there hardly a difference because im getting a bit worried.

Thanks!

Oh make no mistake — the budget cuts are definitely going to have an effect on admissions criteria for all UCs. The UCs simply can’t afford to enroll the same number of students they did in previous years.

In fact, I just received a mass email from Mark Yudof (the president of the UC system) regarding the UC budget prospects. Here is an excerpt:

“UC already enrolls 11,000 more students than the state is willing or able to fund, at a cost of $122 million. We simply will not be able to continue accepting students without funding and still offer them the high-quality education they deserve. In planning for 2010-11, we will have to consider further reductions in new freshman enrollments.”

So to answer your question, yes, there is going to be a considerable difference in admissions requirements. Sorry :(

Thanks alot for the reply Vicious.

That’s bad news to hear, hopefully it gets better at late 2010 cause that is when I plan on applying.

well, most ucs made a cut of about 5-10% in freshman enrollment, so you can do the math. In any case, most people who would get into a specific campus one year would still get in the near future.

to be honest though, some people did not get into some ucs that i thought that they would, but this is too subjective to be a useful observation.

and not many people know this, but do note that berkeley (and merced if it matters) are increasing freshman enrollment as a result of the budget cuts. but of course, the rest are all decreasing.

dont worry too much. If you can place into elc thats really good and you can get in that way. but put it this way. if you dont get inot the uc youd want to, theres no way you could logically blame it on the budget cuts.

The biggest difference I saw was with UC Davis. I personally didn’t apply, but most people in my class did, thinking it was a safer bet than UCSD and UCSB. Surprisingly, I only know of two or three people who got into Davis, while many people got into UCSD and UCSB. Funny how that works out. I saw on another discussion board that UCLA and UC Berkeley’s acceptance rates were both around 20-21%. That’s a pretty significant decrease…my college books from 2008 had both schools at around 27-28%.

BUT - this year might be a bit of an anomaly because of the unusually large applicant class. Even with the budget cuts, I think there’s supposed to be fewer applicants next year. So it might not be as tough as this year!
