How much have you spent so far?

So I've spent over $1000 on fees for applications, auditions (musical theater), sending sat & act scores, mailing transcripts & supplements, etc. never mind the extra hundreds of dollars that I spent/will spend to drive & fly to all my auditions that are closest an 8 hour drive away, plus hotel fees..

The whole application process is so expensive.. & then they expect us to pay more up front & tons on tuition etc..

This is honestly just another thread to pass time & let people vent. So let's hear how much you have spent on the college application process?

Not that much actually. $90 application fee, and whatever the cost is to send one ACT report ($15?), cost of shipping a package (didn’t fly out, sent a tape instead), plus a $5 charge from my school for paperwork and stuff.

So, about $115? Not that bad. But if I had applied to the 18 schools I was planning on it would’ve been ridiculous.

Then again, compared to the cost of college even $1000 isn’t much…

Ugh the expense is ridiculous. I applied to five schools - spent about $280 on app fees (I’m just glad one of the schools sent me a fee waiver so it wasn’t more…), maybe $60 on score reports (thank god for those free ones!), $55 or something ridiculous like that for 3 CSS Profiles (WTH!!!), plus of course ACT and SAT registration fees (ACT twice, SAT once - what’s that add up to anyway?) and anything else I’m forgetting. At least my HS is nice enough to send my transcripts and everything for free…

So I guess I didn’t spend nearly as much as other people, but still - considering half of it came right around the time my parents were having to figure out ways to pay for my brothers to come home for Christmas (oh airlines, why must you be so expensive?) plus finding the money for normal monthly bills (silly things like the mortgage, student loans, yadda yadda) it seemed like 10x the amount it really was. My parents were thankfully way more chill about paying for things than I was - the day I needed to borrow a credit card to pay three app fees (which came to like $200) plus another three score reports (which is another $30) I was ready to burst into tears. So glad to finally be done with all that…

I would say over the last couple of years with college visits, SAT/ACT fees and college application fees probably around $3500/4000. (this would include hotels, meals out, gas etc)

I was lucky to get fee waivers for all the schools I applied to. My sister paid my SATs and a foundation paid for my TOEFL. Apart from that, I spent around $700 on score sending and CSS profiles, plus other things I sent via regular mail. I hope I’m done with expenses

I got fee waivers for all the schools I applied to. I only paid a little bit to send ACT scores. I don’t even remember how much that came to, but not that much.

I applied to only 5 schools and probably only ended up having to spend about $90 bucks. Didn’t need to fly anywhere but if you add the driving prices then its about $200 maybe. not to shabby over a 3 month period

16 college applications about $70
Did 2 summer programs and needed 16 transcripts from both $15 each
Dual enrolled so needed 16 transcripts $15 each
16 SAT scores
16 ACT scores
Sent a lot of them priority mail at $20 each

I’m probably missing something. I haven’t calculated it and I really don’t want to. Id say I’ve spent $1000-$2000 but it’s probably more…

Luckily, I received a fee waiver/free application for all of my schools. I’ve been $60 on sending ACT scores. I’ve spent $120 on 2 ACT tests (on with a $21 late fee) and 1 SAT test. I estimate that my CSS profile is going to cost me $105, unless I can get a fee waiver for that. I’m not complaining though. I lot of my friends are musicians and actors. Their expenses are so much higher, what with airfare and hotel costs and extra application fees.

^musicians and actors can send in tapes/recordings. MUCH cheaper.

Not unless they pass pre-screenings and have to fly to live auditions, which many of them do. Or at least MY musician and actor friends (since they dream of going to places like Northwestern, Julliard, Manhattan School of Music, NYU, etc).

My roommate just found out she passed the pre-screening for Julliard and her live audition is exactly a week after her Manhattan School of Music. Which means she has to fly to New York twice. I’m not sure EVERY musician and actor goes through this but she’s spending a lot of cash getting from one live audition to another.

I applied to 23 schools, and they ranged in price from 0-$75 to apply. I don’t even want to know how much I’ve spent.

TWENTY-THREE? Mother. Of. God.

I spent around $400 applying to 15 schools. An application fee of $140 was spent on 6 UCs, thought my all my application fees were waived for the 9 private schools (either through QuestBridge or CollegeBoard’s fee waivers). Rest I spent on sending test scores, css profiles, and transcripts requests for classes I took during concurrent enrollment.

It is crazy how many fees we have to pay! Congrats to those who got waivers & escaped the money sucking fees! good luck to everyone in their college application process! I hope you all get into your perfect school! (:

I applied to 16 schools with 3 schools having fee waivers. Each tended to cost around 55-70 dollars. Then, add that to the large amount of test score reports and transcripts for 2 schools. Then, add CSS reports and whatever else. I think my family spent around $1,500-2,500 dollars.

@geofie, same to you!
Guys, if you don’t ask for waivers, you’re not gonna get them. I went ahead and emailed all my PROFILE schools if they had payment codes or whatchamacallem. That cut $57 from my total cost with that crappy little form. I honestly don’t see the point of it. You’d think that needing financial aid in the first place would be a sign that you can’t pay all the damn fees, but nooo, let’s pay for a financial aid application as well.
