How much help do intel/siemens qualifiers get?

<p>I was researching the intel/siemens competition for high school students and was amazed by the complexity and specificity of many of the projects. As an interested student, I have a few questions.</p>

<ol>
<li><p>What percentage of intel/siemens qualifiers get there with help from a mentor?</p></li>
<li><p>What percentage of intel/siemens qualifiers get in contact with a mentor through family/friend connections?</p></li>
<li><p>What percentage of intel/siemens qualifiers get there with help from professional equipment?</p></li>
<li><p>What are my chances to complete a research project like these, without the help of a mentor, connections, and professional equipment?</p></li>
</ol>

<p>The reason for the last question, is that I don't have any of these resources readily availabe to me, and I would still like to carry out a serious research project. Maybe even qualify for intel/siemens. Thanks for helping.</p>

<li><p>Most of them do. Aside from the mathematics & computer science fields (in which the kids have probably already gone to PROMYS or ROSS etc.) you definitely NEED a mentor. Most of the people who do well in Intel and Siemens get the help of a mentor.</p></li>
<li><p>Many kids whose parents are scientists receive help from them. There’s nothing wrong with using connections to get in contact with a mentor.</p></li>
<li><p>As I said, with mathematics & computer science you do not need the equipment. However, the skill level to complete a Siemens/Intel level math project requires advanced math knowledge. Take a gander at some of the winning math projects if you don’t believe me. </p></li>
<li><p>Probably very slim.</p></li>
