How much is a significant donation?

I won a couple hundred dollars from a competition and i was wondering if donating this amount of money to some charity would be of any impact on my college app. Of course I'll still donate regardless, but is it even worth it to put on my app??

I'm thinking probably not, but just need to get your opinion CC because my parents seem to think otherwise..

1.) You won’t be admitted for donating to charity…
2.) It seems like it takes away from the spirit of it if you expect to profit from charity

The donation will have absolutely NO impact on your application.

Here’s how you may benefit:

If the competition was somehow associated with an academic class, and you are getting a rec from that teacher, and he/she asks you what you did with the money and you humbly say you donated it, maybe it gets in your rec as evidence of you being a good person.

But ugh listing on your app that you donated money? Donating time is one thing to put on your app, but money may make you just look like a conniving snake. Not that you are, of course.

For those who think it kills the point of the good deed to list it on an application, how do you feel about community service on an application? A lot of charity work that teenagers do involves earning money for a cause (usually by rather inefficient methods) and donating it. This often appears in one clean step. Earning money with the charity for the charity. Sour lemon earned money through an alternate method for a cause. Though I can’t think of a decent way to list it on your application, donating money is underrated and often much better than other ways that kids try to help the world. Wanting to show off your accomplishments does not make you a conniving snake. Donating money that could’ve been used for one’s self is an accomplishment. I don’t know how you could list it though, my apologies.

Thinking that it took the point out of it is why I haven’t been recording hundreds of volunteer hours that I’ve had. While people I know have bragged about racking up hours for some congressional medal, I decided that I didn’t want to profit from charity. Then, more recently, I’ve found that I need volunteer hours for certain scholarships. Luckily, certain places did record my hours, so I suppose I’ll use those for scholarships, because of the lack of ability for my family to pay anyway. Though I am not particularly happy with using volunteering to my advantage, at least most of my volunteering occurred before I knew I needed certain hours, and most hours aren’t even recorded. It just feels better for me if there’s nothing for me to gain, aside from mental benefits.

You asked.

thanks for the replies guys!!! i agree…personally speaking if i was an adcom and i saw a kid put that on his/her app i wouldn’t be very impressed at all. cause…if you’re rich, you can just donate all the money you want, and no one can confirm where it came from, right? (like, if you actually made it yourself or if it was jjust from your parents…)

anyway, thanks again!!

If you were to include it, you should note the fact that you won said competition and parenthesize the fact that you donated its award.
