I plan on submitting, along with my common app essay (which is 580 words) , 2 writing samples. One is a 1200 word essay about a life-changing experience and the other is another 1100-1200 word response to a movie quote. I'm applying to mostly small schools (largest is 2500 people). Writing is definetly a strong point for me but I dont want to be inconsiderate and give them a hefty load--Afterall, I am including 3 recommendations, along with my gc. So, is this too much

i think so...i don't think u should submit the writing samples at all, ur personal statement should be enough to show that you can write i suppose

That sounds like quite a bit of reading. If you feel like you "must" submit a writing sample only send one. That sounds like a lot of reading for the adcom.

thanks for the quick responses...I'm just using the common app, is there a personal statement on there?

What If I trimmed one of the essays to 950? They would both be 1.5 pages along with my common app (on the print preview it was 2/3 a page) I really like both of them a lot.

Ultimately its up to you. But personally I would not want to send more information than necessary at the risk of ****ing the people off who might be reading it, giving them a lot to read. But its your choice, if you think they are good go for it.

Usally schools that request a writing sample want it in the form of a graded paper with comments. Just writing an additional essay at many schools does not constitute a writing sample. If the school does not request it, don't send it because it most likely will not be read.

"the thicker the folder the thicker the kid"- I'm not trying to be mean, just quoting an admissions officer. of course, that's not always true, but try to limit what you send.
