How much is enough when sending emails to college admissions?

Is it bad to send email about updates?
Is it bad to send emails about mistakes with grades or common app?
is it bad to send any emails?

If there’s a mistake in any section of your application, you should definitely contact them. If there was a change in your curriculum (ex. you dropped a class or took up a new one), let them know. If you have any questions which are muddled/not clearly answered from their website, then contact them as well. I’ve lost count of how many of these e-mails I’ve sent (lol), but I’d definitely limit any contact to these three categories.

If the update concerns any new ECs/accomplishments:
If your colleges don’t provide specific forms for these, I’d avoid the emails. They already deal with volumes of application materials, and most get easily annoyed when extra/unsolicited info is sent.
I’d only report them if they explicitly welcome these type of updates.

The commonapp kept logging me out so I submitted what was good in my application. It was the night of the deadline. After the deadline I emailed the school what I wanted in my additional info because that’s what wouldn’t work so I had nothing. Is that okay? I talked about a couple activities and programs that I thought was important.

@BB8764 As long as you explained the Common App issue (the reason for the update), you should be okay.

There was also a problem with my essay that I had a send an email to them about. @Lilliana330

@BB8764 Any changes to your essay due to technical difficulties might be considered. It’s up to each school how to handle that. However, trying to alter it/add to it “just because” might be frowned upon.

Again, commonapp was having saving problems and kept logging me out so when it submitted, I guess it didn’t save my new draft so my tough draft was submitted. I contacted admissions and they said to “email it(:” so I did that. The rough draft had some minor errors and different phrasings than my final draft. For the other problem, I explained to them what happened and they said it would be added to my file. I just hope I won’t be hurt because of all this. @Lilliana330

Ohh, why didn’t you mention their request before lol. If they asked you to email it, then it’s obviously okay and won’t harm you. Good luck. @BB8764

I was freaking out! I just emailed them saying I accidentally posted my rough draft and I was having saving problems with common app and they said to email it with a smiley face! I’m just worried if I emailed them too much with two kind of big problems! I didn’t ask about sending the additional info but that was really just problems with commonapp so I didn’t think there was a need to ask. You know what I mean? Thank you for your feedback by the way @Lilliana330

@BB8764 No problem! As for the additional info, if they didn’t complain about it, you should be okay. You probably should’ve asked, but it’s done. Since it’s part of the error as well, they probably didn’t mind.

Sounds like you have done a lot of emailing with them… good news is that the new version of the Common App had a lot of problems last fall, so you may not be the only one.

Regarding the comments above about what to email them about, I disagree about whether to tell them about EC accomplishments. If they are significant (say a high finish in a state competition), then you should tell them. What my kid did was batch a few things up in one email. She had a schedule change to tell them about, a top 5 state athletic competition finish, and some other EC accomplishment I don’t remember – she put it all in one email.

Admissions committees only know what you tell them… so if you have significant accomplishments since your app went in, you definitely should notify admissions and ask them to consider it with the rest of your application.

is it bad I did a lot of emailing with them? my guidance counselor also sent an email about a scheduling conflict that she didn’t state in the report. I didn’t think this would be bad at all because I’m just updating or fixing corrections. I’m not adding anything to my app. It’s not like it’s anything bad. I’m just really worried they’ll think I’m disorganized or something which I’m not. I don’t want it to have a bad effect on me. The rest of my application is fine. @intparent

Yes, I understand your concern about appearing disorganized… Regarding your initial post, any updates on ‘grade mistakes’ should come from your GC if possible.

Never mind. I just read on something from an admission officer from the school, they are perfectly fine accepting new information and that it’s good to advocate from themselves! I’m good @intparent @Lilliana330
