I didn't do so well in my freshman year in HS, but have an upward trend. I'm a junior now, and have around a 3.8/4.0 in AP and college-level classes. How much will my freshman year negatively impact me?

Obviously an upward trend helps but you're from out of state where admission to UVA is near Ivy League level. Looking at your other posts I hate to say it but I don't think you're there.

Um, other posts? As far as the SAT I score in my profile, I took it in 10th grade with no prep. I'm taking it in March and expect around a 2000, and then a final time perhaps next year with a 2100.

Definitely plan to take about three SAT Subject Tests (II's). UVA recomends those.
Also, do you have any extracurricular activities, ones that make you stand out especially.
Do you have any leadership positions?
And what is your race, as that is sometimes a factor.

An upward trend is definitely considered and can help when freshman year isn't great. It also helps when the guidance counselor addresses the weak grades/program in their rec.

I think Princess might be emphasizing extracurriculars (we just saw ECs) too much here. A long resume with shakey academic work makes us wonder if you are able to prioritize appropriately. In college, no one will help you delegate you time and you'll need to be able to put ECs in their place. They're important, but not an excuse for weak academic work.

So good to hear Dean J kind of suggesting that Academics are more important than ECs. Naturally ECs have importance and some students will get in especially for EC accomplishments but afterall UVA is a place of higher learning - so academic grades over 3-4 years, SATs, SAT2s, other academic related awards and recognitions, teachers reco. highlighting native intelligence, presevarance, abilty to grasp new matters, ability to do research - I am sure matter a whole lot more than just ECs for most of the applicants.

I could be wrong though. Really dont have any data to support my feeling one way or another.

Goodness, I apologize for using the word "delegate" up there...it doesn't make sense. I blame it on my fever and/or Dayquil. I have caught the winter bug that's floating around and it is making me a little woozy.

Ah, thanks for the insight, Dean J. And when I say that I didn't do so well, I had a 3.4 and have improved each year since.

"Definitely plan to take about three SAT Subject Tests (II's). UVA recomends those."

Does that mean 3 differernt Subject Tests in 3 different subjects? I took 4, but in two subjects (US and World History, and BioE/M).

When I said three SAT Subject Test I meant three different ones.
Also, I would like to apologize for seeming to stress EC's too much.
