How much is GSU a step down from Tech?

The workload, standards, etc. I want to transfer to tech after 2 years in GSU and I want to know if it will help out. I was kind of lazy in high school and I knew if I went straight to tech I would fail out. I need a better work ethic. So how does it compare? I know Georgia Tech is the top 4 engineering schools. But I'm taking education wise and job placement with a degree from both colleges.

It’s hard to compare the schools directly because they have different majors. However, if you compare the business schools (the only real point of comparison): Tech has a much higher starting salary (Tech BS: $55,000 / yr, GSU BBA: $43,000 / yr). Tech has a higher placement rate, and from a career perspective, is much, much more known outside of Georgia. Even inside Georgia it’s more respected.

As for difficulty: Tech is much more difficult academically, even in the same program (business). If you’re going to try a technical (e.g. chemistry at GSU to chemical engineering at GT), it’s going to be immensely more difficult. You will need to work much harder, faster, and on more complicated material if you want to go into Tech engineering.

It’s not impossible to make the jump, though. It’s like taking a punch from a heavy weight boxer: if just walk in the ring and let him hit you, he’ll knock you out. However, if you know the punch is coming and you prepare yourself for it, you’ll be able to take it and come back swinging.

Thanks for the response. That really pumped me up. I have two friends in Georgia State and they adapted quickly. 1 has a 3.5 and other has a 3.7. I want to do that good starting off. I hear no matter where you go college isn’t easy. Plus I heard at tech that no matter how smart you are it will push you to the limit.

That’s a very good characterization of Tech.

Just keep your nose in the books, have fun (but not too much fun), and remember what’s important and you’ll do fine at any college. Good luck.

Thanks I’ll do that.

I just will say something I found here for the past one year.

GT is not killing you actually. However, you have to work really hard, especially when you have a strict professor.

Some professor are so strict that the only 5-7% students can get A. But the good point is that you can really learn something. If you don’t like such professors, skips them for good.

Thanks, I bet if I went to Tech first I would be one of the complainers.

Just another thought…I’m not sure if you are planning on majoring in Engineering or what your grades/scores are like, but you might want to check into the 2+2 program many schools have with Tech. If you search for Regents’ Engineering Transfer Program (RETP) on Techs site you’ll find the list of all the schools and the program requirements.
