My son has been accepted to Kelley, and received $11K per year scholarship. We are out of state and it will still be quite expensive. We are hoping he gets more though the SSA process, but I'm trying to decide how much of a premium Kelley is worth. His other choices will be Ohio State (at least 12K scholarship and cheaper to begin with), Miami of Ohio (Half to full tuition scholarship, but we won't know the final amount until spring), and hopefully UMD College Park, our state Flagship (probably no scholarship, but being in-state makes it pretty inexpensive to begin with). We can afford any of them without breaking the bank, but will have three in college at once, so we will feel the pinch. He thinks he will ne happy at any of them, and when asked where he wants to go will tell people it depends on the money. (he's more frugal than I am).
Opinions? Thanks

1214mom,

All those listed are good schools. The undergraduate business school rankings are close enough for all of them. Smith School of Business was ranked 11 while Kelley was ranked 9 by USNWR. Academic programs are similar. Being in College Park, he may have internship opportunity during regular semester. So, it is difficult to justify the cost difference. Has he been admitted into the business program at U of Maryland?

He won’t find out about CP until late January. It’s the only one he’s unsure about admission to. If he gets into the business school there, unless he gets full tuition to Miami, he may very well become a Terp. Just curious… For the business school rankings are you looking at undergrad? I thought UMD was much lower than 11. Thanks

1214mom,

Here is the link from U of Maryland. I can’t get to the paid site in USNWR.

DS3 did not apply to any other public school due to the cost consideration and the possibility of him going to graduate school. We believe that Kelley offers enough opportunities and a competitive environment for him to grow and compete with students from any school except for a few top ivies because of the name brand. His effort will determine his future.

I think the same can be said for Smith. Good luck to your son.

Thanks for the link. UMD is 11th for public schools. I think overall it may be in the 20s. They are all really good schools… In the end it may come down to money, or if he visits and says “this one’s for me,” that’s where he will likely go.

1214mom good luck with your son’s decision. Just visited University of Maryland and loved it…looks like it will also come down to money for me

Yeah UMD is a great school and has all the benefits of DC close by. But Kelley school is very good. Miami of Ohio may be cheapest for him. He hasn’t visited any of them but UMD yet. We may go in March, or wait til spring break. He seems less interested in Ohio State, so we may not visit there.

I suggest if you visit IU you should also visit OSU in the same week. That’s what we did with my D. You will be quite impressed with both campuses. In addition to attending the standard admissions office meeting for all potential students and going on the regular admissions tour, we set up appointments to also meet with an admissions person at Kelley and Fisher business schools (and tour inside the schools). UMD - Smith would not meet with us. This additional insight into the b-schools will help with the decision.

My son is a junior in the Kelley School of Business. I wanted him to pick an in-state school (Miami of Ohio) due to the difference in cost. He was adamant that IU was the place for him. He was right. What convinced me was their career placement office. They are very focused on helping students find internships and jobs. This has worked out very well for him as he had a good internship in Chicago after his sophomore year and is working on getting an internship this summer. The career placement office really opens doors for the Kelley students as many companies recruit their students and think highly of them.

I would recommend that you visit the schools. This will give you (and him) a better feel for which one is right for him. Miami is located in a more rural area, IU is in a small town and OSU is in a big city. If your son is a sports nut he will love Ohio State, like IU and not think so much of Miami (unless he loves hockey.) I would investigate the career placement offices of all the schools. You will find that certain companies recruit at certain schools. Find out what kind of help they offer to their students in this area.

(My other son is an OSU grad who started in their business school but changed majors. He was going to OSU no matter what- his choice- so IU was never a consideration for him. He also looked at Miami but it was not a good fit for him.)

Thanks everyone.
I have knowledge of UMD and their business school - I spent several years there, and it’s only improved since then. My son is NOT a sports guy. IF he gets into UMD and the Smith School A’s a freshman, he may decide he doesn’t even want to visit other places. All my “unofficial” research indicates that Kelley is considered “above” the other options, for things like national recruitment, rankings, “quality of student” and other things. Of course all of this s relatively subjective. I know that for overall ranking, it goes OSU, UMD, and then IU and MU are tied. I do realize that my son may change majors, and besides the Kelley School, I would not consider IU worth the extra cost, especially since he loves UMD, and has spent time taking classes there. This is such a tough decision. I’m trying to follow his lead, but also doing research, gathering information, etc. So I can help guide him.

I’m more confused than ever. I’d kind of figured that if son got accepted to UMD and business it would be a no-brainer. But - We got notification recently that son got close to full tuition at Miami, so we would only need to pay room and board. With scholarship, IU is still 32k a year for us. UMD will be in-state if he gets in. I know Kelley is considered by many to be “the best,” but is it worth 60k more than Farmer? (It seems like for many people the final decision is between those two).
Thanks for any insight.

Did you visit both schools yet? It is worth the trip and will definitely help you and your son make a decision. Take a full day to see each school and be sure to schedule a visit with each business school. If they have a tour of the Kelley LLC I would do that, too.

I would concentrate more on the right fit for your son. For now, ignore the cost and pick the fit. Then decide is school #1 is within your budget.

We wont be visiting until spring break, so he can spend a fair amount of time at each school.
He’s more focused on the money than I am… I’m trying to figure out which would be the best overall fit for him.

I agree that you need to visit. We visited both last spring break - after the visit Miami came off the list and D still loves IU. The vibe is very different and I think spending some time at each school will help your son decide which is the better fit for him. Miami is a beautiful campus but D knew right off the bat that it didn’t feel like a good fit for her.
