How much is New York a factor?

I have been skimming the ED threads and I hear a lot about people wanting to go to New York. How much is New York a factor for those of you applying to Columbia?

i didn’t apply, but i will say that new york was the reason i didn’t. not that i don’t love the city - i do - but it’s just not the college-y environment i’ve always wanted to be a part of.

HUGE. it’s like… ok don’t shoot me for this… but harvard in new york city. it gives endless opportunities, especially for internships. but also, i like how i wouldn’t be secluded from the rest of society for 4 years. you have the campus, but you still see children and other human beings besides college kids.

It’s pretty much the deciding factor for me. I really only want to go to school in New York. I was set on applying to at least one Ivy and if Columbia wasn’t in New York it really wouldn’t be the same college to me. If Columbia was rural like other Ivy’s I might have applied to Penn. Columbia’s history in New York is really what sets it apart from other universities.

I’m used to the environment since I live in Northern Jersey and commute to Columbia every Saturday for SHP class. It was a logical choice to go ED at Columbia.

i really dont like how most ppl only apply cuz its in ny and its an ivy…i mean cmon, they are other reasons…

SO MANY other reasons…

like seriously, if u wanan go to school in ny, there are lots of options but ppl apply to columbia just cuz its an ivy.
it really sucks for ppl who acutally LIKE IT and wanna go there and not just cuz of its NAME.

yeah like i could care less the reasons you choose to apply. if you get in, you deserve it. i’ve just been theorizing that Columbia has a ton of applicants because of its location. i do agree that new york is a nice touch to it though. i like new york of course. if i didn’t i would not apply. it’s also kind of strange when some people don’t consider the core that much.

in general to me, location isn’t that important. you can make the best of your environment. the people that are around you are crucial.

New York is kind of a big deal. All the opportunities being NYC provides! All the shopping! And the nightlife! I mean, come on, it’s the best city in the world! (Especially attractive to me because I’ve been stuck in Suburbia for the past 17 years of my life)

yea i guess.
well ive been here for the past (almost) 18 years so im like whateverrr haha.
i just think its ridiculous how some ppl are like i wanna go to college in a city, so they choose ny and then theyre like i wanna go to an ivy…okay great columbia is an ivy in ny thats all nothing else matters im applying there.
its so dumb.
i didnt even consider columbia until i visited it and i fell in love with everything about it even tho it was my greatest desire to LEAVE nyc after being here for so long.

i think the initial attraction for a lot is that it’s a well-respected, prestigious university in nyc. thats what drew me to it. but it wasnt until after a lot of research that i decided that it was my number one. so its a factor, but not the deciding one.

It’s all about the food. Try eating your way down Broadway sometime. You’ll reach Battery Park with an empty wallet and a full stomach, but New York’s food culture is like no other.

haha.
well u mite not be able to eat that much!
and battery park doesnt have that much great stuff…ive been there wayy too many times.
the restaurants near columbia r pretty good tho! and the ones in the village!

Mamoun’s by nyu is amazing…greatest falafel’s ever. also there’s the kati rolls place right by there.

It was definitely a pretty big factor for me, though of course not the only one.

NYU one of HUGE reason i wanna go there

i like dartmouth and brown and so on but i decided Columbia b/c it’s in ny
so much opp and so much life!

and then of course there are core, specific alumni/professor i found out, art+eng thing, liberal env, beautiful campus, and so on

I love the city, but it was just a plus, never a factor.

It was like a nice a little plus for me. Not a huge deciding factor—when I visited, it was gorgeous, and I liked how enthusiastic people were about the Core… I like schools with a well-respected core curriculum. Plus it’s not so much NYC as it is within a 5-hr. range of home.

Quite honestly, NYC was the reason why i dropped Columbia from my list. Even though the campus was “closed” Columbia didn’t feel quite the same as the other colleges i visited. Indeed even UPenn, another Urban schools, felt a little less hectic because it wasn’t in downtown.
