I'm currently a sophmore attending Rutgers with a 4.00 gpa. With scholarships and such, I'm paying close to nothing for my education. However... I'm tempted to go to NYU.
I think the environment is more interesting, the people are more interesting, the classes smaller and more difficult, etc.
Partly it has to do with that Rutgers, which is already ranked lower than NYU, is getting worse while NYU is getting better.
But I recognize that most likely, the academics are going to be marginally different. I'm more interested in the social aspect. Living in the city, being surrounded by people who are well... more of my socioeconomic status I suppose. I just don't feel like I fit in too well at my state school.
Anyway, I was wondering if people think that's really worth all the extra money NYU would cost (keep in mind I'll only be attending for 2 years).

If you are wealthy and money is not a concern, then why not? If you are middle class, even upper middle class, then no, I don't think it is worth the money. I do know someone that did attend for 2 years, and it was a stretch for their family (first 2 years were also virtually free at a community college).

With only two almost-free years to go, I would finish up at Rutgers and then get a job in Manhattan. That's what I did, back in the day. In the meantime, you can also jump on the train and do cool stuff in NY any time (especially if the academics aren't that challenging). At the end of the two years, you can get a great apartment with the money you saved.

I know it's hard to find friends with similar interests at a huge school. But NYU is huge, too.

are you going to go to grad school? if so then finish at rutgers and then transfer to nyu for grad school. why spend extra money when you are getting a good education. hop the train and go into nyc more often if you want to be there so much it is a lot less money to visit than to live there.

good luck on your decision
