How much is too much

How much income is "too much" to qualify for need based aid? My mom works part time for barely anything, but my dad makes a good salary (+80k). I have four siblings including a brother who will be attending college a year after me. Basically my parents can't put a dime to our college but I'm afraid that the incomes might make it difficult to qualify for need based aid. Am I worrying needlessly or should I start looking for merit scholarships?

You will probably get some need based but you really should go to the college web site and find their net price calculator and see what it comes up for you. Best thing would be to sit down with your parents when you do this so they can help you with some of the financial answers. The more accurate your input, the more accurate their output. Remember - each college will end up with a different number for you so you will need to check all of those that you are thinking about applying to.

When are you going to college?

The best scholarships ( for four years) are from the colleges themselves.

As for qualifying for need based aid, it depends on what schools you apply to. Many don’t give much/any free money beyond Pell Grants.

What are your stats?
What is your home state?

What schools are you applying to?

*Chance at admission
I would like to know my chances at getting into and receiving scholarships at UF.
I’m a junior who lives in Florida. I have a 4.25 weighted GPA, and will graduate with 6 AP classes (APUSH, Lang, Lit, Gov, Microeconomics, & Stats). I have received school awards in Chorus, English, and an overall grade level award (9th), as well as a PRIDE award from the local chamber of commerce. I’m currently 10th in my class. My ACT is a 28 and I have an 1810 for my SAT (730 CR, 540 Math, 540 Writing. I plan to retake it in the fall). I have been a part of the Interact Club (1 year), joined Thespians this year, played soccer for 2 years, and actively participated in a high school level band at my church for 3 years, earning 245 service hours.

UFlorida doesn’t give much merit, and would require much higher test scores.

Will you qualify for Bright Futures?

I qualify for second tier but I’m 20 points away from top tier (I hope to qualify for it with my fall retake). I’m also looking at USC, northeastern, Georgia, gulf coast, and ucf in addition to uf (which like others have said, not too great in terms of aid)

UGa won’t give you the aid you need since it’s an OOS public.

USC gives good aid.

NEU doesn’t meet need. Try their NPC.

Thanks mom2collegekids. I’ll definetly look at NPC’s and work on my test scores
