I've been thinking about adding econ as a double major, but my school only requires calc 1 and calc 2 along with a kiddie stats class to complete the math requirement for the economics degree. I feel like this is nothing and that I should be challenging myself more than that. I looked at some of the better state schools for econ such as UCLA and UT, and those two seem to only require basic calculus as well! Is having that little calculus really all you need to apply to the top PHD and masters in economics programs, including the likes of UChicago and Harvard?

If you want to be most competitive at graduate level economics admissions I would recommend taking at least Multivariable Calculus, Econometrics/Applied Statistics, Linear Algebra and I’d also recommend adding on Real Analysis and Differential Equations if you can.

I agree, at least throw one or two of those upper level math or stats classes to show that you can handle the challenge.
