How much merit aid did you get from University of Michigan Ann Arbor OOS? Would they give me any?

I am not sure how much Merit aid University of Michigan offers OOS students.

I am a Washington State resident with a 3.9 GPA and a 33 ACT in one sitting. Please be blunt. Do I have any chance at getting merit aid or will everything be completely decided by financial need.

Very little merit aid is given to OOS students. The kids who do get money are amazing.

I don’t think you will get merit aid from Michigan.

None, unless they want someone desperately from Washington State to increase their geographic diversity. Michigan reserves giving out merit aid to only a very small handful of applicants who are at the tippy-top of the applicant pool. If you had a 35 or 36 ACT and a straight A average in all honors and all APs offered, and are the valedictorian or salutatorian of your class with amazing atypical extracurricular or work experience, then maybe, but no guarantees.

Agree…no merit. And they don’t guarantee to meet full need for OOS students either.

Did this end up being your list of applications? Adding Michigan?

OP, I hope you applied to UW for a potentially affordable school.

Cubby…you have made a few threads in the past detailing that you have a high EFC but your parents will only pay $20k.

I’m not sure why you didn’t heed people’s warnings about applying to some affordable schools…ones that would give you huge merit. I have no idea why you applied to schools like UMich or that list of schools in post #5 since they wouldn’t be affordable. Even H and S would look at your dad’s medical practice and estimate a high parent contribution. (And I really wonder if your FAFSA EFC estimate is correct because that suggests only an income of about $110k, and likely your parents earn more than than and likely have savings as well. Perhaps you forgot to include your dad’s retirement contributions for the year.)

UWash is your flagship public. It likely will be your only affordable school for computer science. You could apply to Miss State and UAH and they would give you large merit awards at this late application date. You missed a LOT of huge merit scholarships from other schools who had deadlines in Dec.

Look to see when UDayton’s scholarship deadline is.

UW CS is also one of the top CS programs in the country. It’s a really good deal if you get a pre-admit to it and only have to pay in-state rates.

Considering that UMich CS isn’t any better (and is also a giant public), I can’t say I understand why you would bother with UMich.

I just wanted to confirm my suspicion. I had the school on my apply list and I was checking it out with what I now know from other threads. I threw the college out. Not worth the time to write the essays.

And yes. I am fairly sure I am going to UW IF I get the pre-admit. That is like <5% of applicants to the CS major so we will see.

@mom2collegekids UDayton is a GREAT find thankyou!

My son is OOS and just got a full ride from U of M but his scores are crazy (ACT 36/SAT 2360/SAT subject scores all perfect 800’s.). He got the Provost Award and a $20K per year Engineering Scholarship of Honor. Tied for #1 in the state for math and all the other extra curricular’s. I just don’t know why they are estimating the cost of college at $60K for an OOS student. That’s what I think is crazy.

Bc that is how much it costs OOS?

@grammey
The Provost’s Award is based on financial need, NOT stats:

@grammy The UM $60k comes from OOS tuition of $45k, room/board $11k, fees of $3k.
