I am currently a junior that is from out of state and I'm really interested UTs Chemical Engineering Program. My grades and standardized test scores are decent: 2210 on SAT (800 Math, 720 CR); 5.8/6.0 Weighted GPA; 4.0/4.0 Un-weighted (Not factoring Honors/AP classes b/c idk how to do that); 10+ AP/Honors courses; top 5% of my class. Extracurricular: NHS, 100+ hrs of volunteer work, Church involvement, etc. So how much would they give me approximately in merit based aid because I'm not confident that I'll qualify for financial aid. Would I drowning in debt by graduation time? Just wanted to know what the community thought.

My son was admitted in 2010 as an OOS student (BME) with similar stats to yours. He was also an Eagle Scout and outstanding distance runner. He received $1,000/year in merit aid. UT doesn’t give much money to OOS students.

Don’t count on any merit aid from UT. I know someone with similar stats as yours (and stronger ECs) who got nothing from UT but $5k/year from A&M. I’ve heard similar to Lizardly regarding merit aid after first year. UTD is very good with merit aid. So is UARK. If you’re in the position that you’ll have to finance your undergraduate education with either merit aid or loans, go for the place that minimizes your debt. I’m not saying don’t apply to UT; just assume you’ll have to cover the entire cost if you get in.

FututeOilBaron my DS has same statistics like you SAT 2280 (770 Math, 710 CR 4.7/5 Weighted GPA, 15 AP Honors all with 5), ACT 34, Top 2% in his class, Instate, and he got 40K/4 year for ECE in UT Austin, he also has some friends top 5% in his School and NMSF, that got same merit for Chemical Engineering.

My son and some of his friend got in Engineering Honors and got Merit Scholarships (As I mentioned in my post), having a better SAT score always help, also ECs activities which nationals or regional positions can help too. The kids that I know that got in Honors and got Merit Scholarships at UT Austin all have SAT +2250 and have reached 1st positions in Region and States for Band, Orchestra, Science Olympiad, Quiz bowl…etc. I don’t know if UT has something specifically for valedictorians.

@FutureOilBaron A&M will always gives more than UT. My friend who is in top 5% get nothing from UT other than loan but receive a full ride plus housing scholarship at A&M. Surprisingly, she also applies to UH and was offered a scholarship but not even half of what A&M give her.

@foafoa Wow! That’s an awesomr deal! Of course, this now boils down to which has the better engineering program and internship opportunities for better jobs.

My sons stats are:
2030 SAT (720 Math, 720 CR, 590 W)
12 out of 277 (top 5% of class)
3.75 unweighted 4.85 weighted GPA
National Honor Society
Varsity Soccer Manager (Sophmore Year)
AP Scholar with Honors (took as many Pre-AP & AP courses as he could fit in - - I think he took 10 total)
Most likely will achieve AP Scholar with Distinction

AP Exams:
English Lang & Comp - Scored 3
Human Geography - Scored 5
United States History - 4
World History - 3
Biology - taking May 2014
Calculus AB - taking May 2014
Macroeconomics - taking May 2014
United States Govt - taking May 2014

Worked part-time (25 - 30 hours per week) during senior year

His offers were as follows:

UT Dallas - $26k to Attend (offered engineering Honors program)
Offered $600 top 10%, AES merit award of $13,750, Standard Loans $5500, EFC $8338

A&M - $24k to Attend (offered engineering Honors program)
Offered $1700 work study, Standard $5500 Loans, A&M Grant $2500, EFC $8338

UT Austin - $27k to Attend (did not get in Honors program)
Offered $600 top 10%, Standard $5500 Loans, UT Austin Grant $9,750, EFC $8338

He is attending UT Austin (we are covering the difference) because their computer engineering program is ranked in the top 10 nationwide. UT Dallas computer engineering was 146th or so nationally and A&M computer engineering if I remember correctly was somewhere around 15th nationally.

Note: I think that currently all UT Austin Engineering programs are in the top 10 in Nation.
