My parents make roughly 160,000 a year. Can I get finacial aid for an out of state school like ASU? If So how much?

I don’t think you can, maybe merit scholarships.

Agree with coolbreeze. With an income of $160k your EFC will probably be too high for need based aid at a State U, even if you are OOS.

With that family income, you will certainly not get any need-based aid unless you will have 1 or 2 siblings in college at the same time, extraordinary medical bills, or similar circumstances. However, if your stats are high, you may qualify for merit aid. You can look for scholarships for which you might be eligible here:

You will qualify for the unsubsidized Stafford loan of $5500 for the first year. However, because of your parents’ income, they will be expected to kick in the lion’s share or perhaps all of the costs of college. Attending an out of state public school is almost always extremely expensive, and the financial aid opportunities even for low-income families are sharply limited since most of the funds are set aside for in-state residents.

First of all, with any income above Pell limits, I doubt you would get any aid at this school or most OOS publics with the exception of a Stafford loan.

However, if you would qualify for merit scholarships, some OOS publics might give you one.

I don’t think any of that would matter to an OOS public like ASU. It’s a FAFSA school and doesn’t have much institutional aid to give. As a matter of fact, it’s having financial problems which is why it cut back merit scholarships this year.

With an income like that, your EFC will be about $60k+.

Are you a junior? What are your stats? How much will your parents pay each year?

Honestly, I don’t recommend shopping at ASU. I rarely consider out of state publics a good deal, but ASU is a particularly subpar school as far as OOS (it’s perfectly good for its in-state price). One college that I recommend you consider is your in-state public school. It will likely not be high tier, but if you can do an application today you might be able to get in for Fall 2010 at a less selective and cheaper school. Otherwise, you can look at applying for the summer of 2011.
