I passed the AP stats exam that I took back at the end of May, and I’m going to SDSU next yr, how much money approximately will it save me since I get 3 credits for Statistics 250?
In most likelihood, you don’t save any money.
Let’s start with some calculations. At say instate $3750 per semester, your average cost is around $250 a unit. So theoretically your Stats 250 class would cost $750 if you took the class and by not taking, you save $750.
However, the only derived benefit monetarily is if by having this 3 unit class in the bank, it allowed you to graduate a semester early. Because you’re paying a flat rate by the semester and not by unit. I think that’s how the CSU’s charge, correct me if I am wrong.
If you’re actually paying by unit then you might see savings, if you were able to use those 3 units to graduate with exactly 120 semester units. If you go over 122, you will then have lost the benefit.
As @ProfessorPlum168 stated it will not really save you money since your tuition is based on being a Full-time student (6+ units) or Part-time (0-6 units). What the credit for the Stats class do, is open up an spot for another elective of interest or help lighten your 1st semester load as an in-coming Freshman.
My son had credit for 5 classes at SDSU which allowed him to take lighter loads when taking his upper division CS courses since these courses were time consuming and project heavy.
Potentially AP can save you a lot. My son was able to get credit for 28 of the 31 hours of AP credit he accrued. He is enrolled in the Accounting +1 program for his Masters in Accounting. He will be able to complete a BS (normally 4 years) and an MS in Accounting (normally 2 year program with much higher tuition) in 4 years. He saved one year of grad school, one year of undergraduate school and will enter the work force 2 years earlier. My daughter on the other hand wasn’t able to get credit for her AP classes at Cal Poly as she was an engineering major.
