For example, next year (junior) I'm still trying to decide which classes I'm going to take. I'm applying mainly to the UC's.
Classload 1 Classload 2
AP Biology AP Biology
Physics H Physics H
AP English AP English
AP USH AP USH
Pre-calc H Calculus AB
Spanish IV AP Spanish

I enjoy both math and spanish a lot. Would it be beneficial if I take classload 2, even if there's a risk of overloading and hurting myself? How much more do the Adcomes like to see classload 2? Would classload 2 help my UC GPA more than classload 1? Should I take the risk?

colleges would rather see a 90 in an ap class than a 98 in a regulars class. they want to see that you're challenging yourself (but also try and do well, obviously). but then again, don't overload yourself TOO much. good luck!

A hard courseload only helps if you can keep up the work and get the grades. Its pointless if you aren't doing well. Don't take "hard" classes just for the sake of taking them.

I don't really worry about the student who scores 90+ in his/her AP or honors class. The real question is what about the student who receves and 85 (a "B") in an honors or AP class rather than the 92-93 in the standard class. Sadly, I think that kid gets screwed.

i've always wondered. since ucs are supposedly number based, how much does a heavy classload help? nonetheless, i recommend that you take classload #2.
