ok im planning on majoring in chemE or microbiology. I would like to go to med school but im afraid of the low starting salary in microbio (in case i change my mind about med school) so im leaning more towards chemE. Problem with that is that Im a kid who likes to party (Im most likely going to the #2 party school in the country, but the party title has nothing to do w/ my choice). I was wondering how much work in addition to my chemE required coursework would I have to do in order to meet all the med school requirements and be ready. I really dont want to take any more than 18 hrs. a quarter.

Whelps you gotta choose then =] Party or no party ;)

If you want to do ChemE and premed you will have little time for partying!

We'll you can always party but don't expect your GPA to be med school material. Several chemE pre-med hopefuls in my class learned this the hard way. Also in bioE don't expect to party Eddie Murphy-style either.

Fact: As an engineer you will not be partying as much as other majors in general. Does this mean you won't get out? Depends on the time you devote to your major and party-lifestyle and how much both take out of you. I have a hard semester and although I finish my work well ahead of the weekend I always seem to convince myself to stay in and "catch-up". This has unfortunately been a very dry semester but fortunately a very successful one. I had a lot of fun freshmen year and will have fun again. Just not now. Deciding when is a good time and when is study time is imperative to your career (especially if your prospects are for med school).

Opinion: Engineering unfortunately doesn't cater to the lives of normal, social people. It is one of my main diatribes against the major that rewards anti-sociable tendencies and lack of people/communications skills. So choosing engineering in general is choosing a career that can take away hours that you might want to spend doing other things. Not that you can't but it most likely won't be auspicious for med school (nor any grad school for that matter).

I am at 17 hours right now (that is the required amount for my major) and if 18 is your minimum, well good for you for not knowing how much time an 18 hour schedule demands (especially of party-time). I go to a party school as well and it can be painful but if you're willing and have to know-how to understand when to suck it up and study, then go for it. If you're easily persuaded and don't have good study skills it will wreak havoc on your GPA, self-confidence (it's hard to watch top kids fail) and patience (your frustration with school will reach really high levels). Believe me it is happening to a lot of my friends right now.

A civil engineer at my school is involved in so many activities, has a social life and is part of the Senate on campus. I respect that. Though she isn't too nice when I asked her, how can I better manage my time like she does.

There are those few that are brilliant and have really good time management skills, hats off to them. I'm talking reality for the most part though.

... well it seems like im gonna end up in biochem or microbio. The social life thing always scared me but i didnt think it was this bad
