I had been a straight A student up until middle school before I got caught in a pit of existentialism and consequentially a lack of participation in class. This led me to get a 2.8 GPA over my freshman and sophomore years.

not going into why I rediscovered my respect for and investment in the educational system, i've been turning everything around this year in face of the fact that my old dream of going to berkeley is in jeapordy. I am capable of raising my overall high school GPA to a 3.7 by the end of the year, am in the IB program, do speech & debate, academic decathlon, academic league, and martial arts currently. Also including international service, an essay competition, and assuming I can successfully articulate why I think it's the ideal place for me to grow my intellect, how hard would it be for me to appeal to Berkeley by the end of the year?

First of all I am not sure how you think you will get your GPA to a 3.7 in one year, so I would check your calculations if I were you. Personally I feel that Berkeley is extremely unrealistic, it is a very competitive school and you basically did horribly freshman and sophomore year. I am sorry, but realistically you need to set your sights lower.

to answer your question, artsygirl, roughly 2.8 + 4.5 = 7.3 / 2 = 3.6 (the real value is close to 3.7, however) UC schools count the wieghted grade, so this would be it. furthermore, the average gpa accepted is 3.8

i’m aware of the qualifications of the school, but i’d appreciate more detailed input on what work i would have to do.

so 2.8 is your weighted GPA? There is little chance of getting into berkeley with a 3.7 weighted. The average unweighted GPA for berkeley is 3.8-3.9

Other posters, I wouldn’t downplay the value of an upward trend, though at this point it’d likely just seem like something that was done to get into college (though, honestly, what isn’t).

@rulesofgrammar you miscalculated. You did the calculations as if you had a 2.8 for one year, here is the correct calculation. 2.8 + 2.8 + 4.5 = 10.1 / 3 = 3.36
Also it is extremely concerning if that is your weighted, you would need like a 3.8 unweighted to get in.
