Were the stats released?

400 were accepted ED; 40% of the Class of 2012

Wow that’s a lot…

How many were accepted ED last year?

I seriously doubt that 40% of the class was accepted ED as Dartmouth is committed to not accepting 40% of the class ED (they try to keep the #s around 35-36%).

Even with the class of 2011 which is the largest admitted class that Dartmouth has in years with 1115 students because more people decided to come during RD, there were 379 students accepted ED 35.87%

class of 2010 1086 - 397 ED (36%)
class of 2009 1075 397 ED (36.9%)
class of 2008 1081 384 ED (35.5%)
class of 2007 1077 397 ED (35.65%)

This Page Has Moved;

Their largest class was class of 2005 with 1137 students which resulted in a housing shortage and the school offered a free year of room and board to families who deferred enrolling for a year.

Damn, Sybbie, you are like Stats Central. Amazing!!

the class matriculant ‘goal’ is 1075, so 400/1075 = 37%. However, for whatever reason, one or two acceptees slip out of ED.

I think bluebayou has it right.

I was figuring it on a class size of 1,000. The goal in the last several years has been to enroll an entering class of 1,075 (they overshot last year by 30).

So if they have accepted 400 in ED this year, then D’s got just over 37.2% of the class filled. There are 675 spots left to be filled through RD.

Last year 14,176 applied for admission (ED and RD combined) with 2,166 admitted (ED and RD combined) for an admit rate of 15.3%. If there is an increase in applicants this year (due to recruiting of international students, etc; ED applications were up 8.9% this year) of 5%, then D could see a total applicant pool of almost 15,000 students.

With over 37% of the 2012 class admitted in ED and the prospect of an applicant pool of nearly 15,000, then RD this year will be the most competitive ever.

Given that D gets about a 50% yield (from ED and RD combined), I suspect that D will looking to accept about 1800 applicants in RD from a pool of potentially 13,600 (excluding the 1400 who applied in ED)for an admit rate of about 13%. Given that underrepresented minorities apply in disproportionate numbers in RD and given that D probably has some quotas to fill, this 13% number probably overstates the likelihood of admission for most candidates.

I don’t think it is likely D will increase enrollment anytime soon. Thoughts??

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/26/education/26education.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print

They definitely won’t

I agree that as to it being unlikely that enrollment will increase.

Even with the opening of the new dorms the extra students from the 11’s had a trickle down effect;

no one called off the waitlist

41 transfers into the class of 2010

it will be really difficult to transfer into the class of 2011

and

the extra 11’s is going to throw the whole room draw situation out of whack (especially now that housing is guaranteed for freshmen and sophomores). This situation will definitely affect the 10’s who stay on next year because they will be at the bottom of the food chain as seniors go first in the room draw.

From today’s edition of The Dartmouth

Early applications increase 11 percent from last year

This makes no sense. 65 admitted students were legacies. This is 13% roughly. How is this a slight increase over last year’s 58%?

I think it was 58 people, not 58%.

Shoot the editor. I saw that and realized it was an error.

As an international students, do you guys think I have better or worse chances of admissions, considering this year is so selective?
