I am a sophomore and took my practice psat last fall. Got 180. If I study hard enough, do you think it would be possible to get into the national merit?

definitely. over the summer, i would study for the sat (not the psat), and gain a sense of all the questions and the strategies that work for you. the psat is basically a shortened version of the sat (two math, two cr, one long grammar) minus the essay, a math, a cr, and the short grammar. therefore i would just begin studying for the sat and it will pay off for your psat. good luck

by the way, after studying over the summer, i was able to raise my sophomore psat from 194 to 236, so you def. can raise your psat to get national merit, which depending on what state you live in, can range from 204-224.
