How much savings do you have?

Checking/Savings: Both $xx,xxx.xx
Roth IRA: $x,xxx.xx
401(k): $xx,xxx.xx

Partial financial aid, partial merit scholarships. Parents pay the rest.

No. Stateside all 4 years.

Computer Science and Economics double major.

2012 Apple MBA 13", retail $1.7k, bought for $1.2k.

Custom built desktop valued at $1k at initial build. Now down to $500 lol

Not sure on the phone. I own a Samsung Galaxy S3, but that was purchased for $100 after renewing my annual contract. I know it goes for $200 with a 2-year.

If a car counts as an “expensive accessory,” I also own my own car. '09 Camry.

Always. After high school, parents haven’t paid for anything but tuition, food, and basic medical care (physicals, dentist, etc).

20.

I think I have maybe $3 in savings?

I am totally dependent on financial aid. I got the full pell grant and a scholarship for full tuition and books from my university for all four years. My parents can’t contribute any money for my education but that’s okay.

No, not studying abroad. I’m not even leaving the state.

Mechanical Engineering

I don’t really have any expensive things. I’m going to use my scholarships to buy a computer before the semester starts. I do have an iPod touch that I good last Christmas from my dad. I have a basic phone but it has unlimited call and text. My dad pays for that but he might start asking money for it later since its on his plan.

I buy all my stuff with my own money. Lol that means I don’t buy anything. I do scrounge up enough money to see a movie every week or so. It’s my weakness.

I am 17 turning 18 in October.

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)

-My parents said if I went in-state, they’d cover tuition, etc. I was a little bummed that I couldn’t go to an expensive private (which would have ended up putting me wayyy in debt), but I’m happy that I get to graduate debt free.

Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)
-I may do a summer program, not sure yet.

What is your major?
-History.

Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.
-I use all Apple products. It’s not because of the “name” (which I know a lot of people won’t believe). It’s just what I’m comfortable with, know how to use, and- bonus- it’s the only thing my parents are willing to buy.

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?

I don’t buy anything for myself except the odd meal.

How old are you?
-20

I have roughly $1000 in savings. Since I don’t buy anything, I really don’t spend much.

Yes, basically all of it is covered by the school/work-study/stafford loans except room & board, which I took out private loans for  My parents didn’t pay for anything.

No, but I might in the future

Undecided (incoming freshman)

No, though I do have a regular macbook that was purchased in 2009. That’s probably the most expensive “accessory” I own

If I’m working

18

I have nothing in savings except $200 my dad put in there at the beginning of the summer when I opened a bank account. When I work I usually end up spending my money on food and gas. My parents now pay these expenses but have never saved anything for school for me

As far as savings go…

I have 6k in a money market account and 3k+ in a checking account.
I’ve never been employed; all my funds come from saving birthday/Christmas/graduation money and cashing in coin jars. I plan to get a part-time job in college to replenish my checking account.

And I’ve been approved for a $500 Visa Student Credit Card (to build credit).

Savings: ~1k
Checking: ~5k
401(k): ~3k

1. Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)
-My parents have not provided a dime to me since I turned 18 - not because they choose to, but because they really can’t afford to. Luckily, I attend on the Post 9-11 GI Bill, so tuition is free and I get a book and living stipend. Plus, I work as does my wife, so I have a fair amount of steady income, though I am also having to pay for my own rent, utilities, medical costs, dental, taxes, etc.

2. Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)
-Nope. I like to think I got my ‘study abroad’ while in the military.

3. What is your major?
-Business Administration/Accounting

4. Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.
-I own a laptop from 2007 that I am looking to replace once Fall starts, and the replcaement will be right around the $1k mark. My phone, from about a year ago, was free with the mail-in rebate ($50 at time of purchase) and it’s pretty basic, only calls and text. Before that I had a Go phone or whatnot and could pay for that by collecting recyclables. I bought a 2011 model year car (for my wife to reliably get to work and such), but when I’m not taking the bus (I get a public transit stipend from work) I drive a 43 year old VW. I don’t own any Apple products for me, but my wife has an iPhone (she deserved it).

5. When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?
-When I do, of course, always. Well, my wife’s and my money :stuck_out_tongue: . The only thing materialistic (not food or needed household item) I can think of getting recently are clothes for work and a school book bag.

6. How old are you?
23

Savings: ~$20K
Checking: ~ 7K
401K: ~ $12K

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)

No, my parents are paying my full tuition.

Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)

I might try to. If I do my parents will cover everything.

What is your major?

Economics.

Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.

I own an iPhone (64GB), a Macbook Pro (15’), an iMac (27’, 3.1 GHz) and an iPad (new one, 64GB). Pretty much everything I own is on the “upper end.”

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?

I technically pay for it but it’s with my parents money.

How old are you?

18

Savings: Like 20 dollars
Checking: 100 dollars or so, going to all be spent on books.

 1. Yes. I did get a grant, took out a loan, and my parent is able to pay some of it. I also got scholarships my first year helped me pay. I am a full time student.

No. I won’t just because it doesn’t work well with my major at all and can really throw me off track. I love studying where I am!

Music Education

My laptop was inexpensive, a little over 500 dollars. My phone is a dumb phone and I got it for free with an upgrade, so it is nice, but free. I have an ipod, but it isn’t the newest one and I really like having it for my major. I’m required to listen to a lot of music. I know I could do it on my laptop too.

Sometimes. It is about 70/30. My parent pays about 70. I’m working to increase that though.

18, almost 19!

How do y’all afford newer model cars?

Full financial aid, parents aren’t paying any tuition. Parents will not give any money for college.

No studying abroad for me.

Accounting.

BlackBerry Torch: not connected at the moment =/ I just use it for it’s wi-fi. Still have my 2007 desktop but looking to buy a laptop for school, I want it to be under $1k.

Yes. Everything in my bedroom except for my desktop pc, I bought it all. PS3, all sneakers, clothes, stupid weight-bench that I never used for what it’s for lol.

23

Great low-interest rate through my credit union because of my overall great credit condition. About 30% down payment helped a lot too, so technically didn’t finance the entire price of the car, which significantly lowered the monthly payments. All that bundled with the fact that it isn’t a luxury car by any means (compact economy car) so it wasn’t uber expensive to start off with.

I definitely couldn’t afford a second newer car if I wanted one, and even that one was more out of necessity because my wife’s previous car died (it was over 15 years old when we originally bought it) and she needed a reliable way to get to work. Luckily I had been anticipating that, so I had spent the previous 4-6 months studying car purchasing online and doing all kids of price checks/reviews before even stepping into the dealership. If you have a good credit union, they will have their own pricing program that they will tell you a particular car is worth (with the VIN). The credit union won’t want you to overpay (unlike a big bank might), so they’ll let you know if the price you negotiated was fair or not. We could have made it easier and have bought used, but it’s much harder to tell if the price is good or not. I figured I don’t plan on selling the car ever, so I can get new and make it laaaaaast.

EDIT: Plus the warranty on a new car is much better than used (since most warranties aren’t transferrable between owners), so that was a big thing with buying new too.

Altogether, I have about $3000 in the bank going into freshman year. It’s saved up from working and from graduation money.

No financial aid. I don’t have loans for my first year but will end up getting them for the next 3 years most likely. I paid for half my first quarter tuition and my parents helped with the other half.

I would like to. It’s all up to how much money I can save up for it. I’ll have to pay myself.

Business

MacBook pro and $100 iPhone. I paid for half the MacBook as well.

Most of the time, yes. Unless I’m with my parents and they are feeling generous.

18

I feel good that I’m paying for most of my way through college, I’m not sure if I could do it honestly without some help from my parents.

I have about $30 in my bank account right now… I came to college with 0 savings. The most I’ve ever saved was about $750 last year at the end of first semester. I used it to pay for tuition/books the next semester. At the beginning of the summer, I had about $150.

Don’t get my wrong, I actually save 50% of every check I get during the school year from working so that I don’t touch it and can use it for the next semester to buy books and pay tuition and hopefully take out less loans.

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)
Yep. Scholarships, grants, work-study, loans, and my parents are covering it.

Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)
I’m planning on studying abroad junior year. It should be cheaper for me and for that reason, I’m planning on staying the whole year in France.

What is your major?
French/Theatre

Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.
Cheap laptop from wal-mart. I do have a smart-phone, but it’s pre-paid and was a graduation gift.

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?
Mostly. Parents throw in here and there.

How old are you?

God I’m getting old.

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)

Yes, I am on financial aid. No, my parents are not paying anything.

No.

Chemical Engineering.

No.

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?

Of course, who else would I obtain money from? I’m not a free-loading, spoiled kid.

How old are you?

28.

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)

Yes I’m on financial aid. My merit scholarship covers 2/3 of the tuition with the rest of the costs being covered with aid from the state, so $0.

Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)

Not studying abroad - might look into after sophomore year.

What is your major?

Undecided - but I’m leaning towards Psychology atm.

Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.

Macbook Pro 13’ - ~$1200 (education discount). I also own a iPod touch from years ago. My phone was free with the upgrade, but it’s less than $200 in value.

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?
It varies.

How old are you?
18

I have like 3K in savings and around $300 in checking.

I’ve got need-based aid, my parents are paying some, grandmother some, and I’ll have taken $14K in loans by graduation.

I will do 2 semesters abroad, junior year. And possibly summers too. My college subsidizes so that it’s the same price to SA as it is to go to normal college.

International Relations.

No. Apple products = civil war in Congo = you fund genocide and slavery so you can play Temple Run on your iPhone.

I don’t really buy a lot of stuff. But if I want to, I’d use my own money.

17, almost 18.

I have like $2,500 in savings and $500 in checking. And I have work study next year too.

Are you on financial aid? If not, are you or your parents paying the tuition? (indicate if you are part-time)

Yea about half is covered for me

Are you studying abroad? If so, are you or your parents paying for rent/food? (indicate if you are International student)
Its covered via the college as a semester at the abroad location, which I intend on doing in my junior year

What is your major?
Neuroscience

Do you own “expensive” acessories compared with others? Ex. Does your laptop cost more than $1000? Does your phone cost more than $200? If you own Apple products, please indicate.
Desktop computer - 750$
Laptop - 780$
Droid X - really old now but was probably like 200 when it was new
Itouch 3G 64GB - 600$
3 Sets of headphones which come to around - 750$
And then there are also clothing, my vaporizer, video games which add up to another 600$ish

When you purchase material goods for yourself, do you use your own money?

Parents helped to pay for the laptop (about 500$) and some computer parts so around 150$ there

How old are you?
18

I probably seem more uh “spoiled” than most people here, but I use my money smartly. I don’t overspend and I only get what I want after thinking about it, not usually on an impulse notice. I have about 550$ in my checkings account for Freshman Year but I will have a part time job at the college. I also have 1.8k in stocks as of this summer so If I need more money, i will just sell them off and I will be fine for the most part.

LOL life savings.

Yes, I am on financial aid. I won’t get into specifics just for the sake of privacy but a lot is covered in grants, and a little in loans, and a little from myself. Parents have been helping seldom with expenses.

Nope, I’m at an in-state uni.

Not sure yet. Aiming for Business Admin- Finance or Informatics maybe…as of now.

Not really. I have a cheap ass two year old phone that kind of sucks but I don’t mind and a laptop that I got about 1.5 years ago for $700, probably worth a lot less now, but like I said about my phone, it’s fine and gets everything done.

Don’t know what you would consider with material goods, but if you mean luxury items, it’s a mix of both of my parents and myself.

19.

I have a little over $1,000 in my bank account, but I had to leave my job and double-pay July rent since I moved several states away for graduate school. Unfortunately I won’t get paid for my work as a TA until the end of September despite starting in August, so things are going to be tight until then. I do have some savings bonds from various childhood events I could cash, but I’d rather let them continue collecting interest unless an emergency comes up.

Only merit-based. In undergrad I had enough scholarships to cover everything and my parents didn’t have to contribute. I paid for my own living expenses as well. They bought me a 2007 car as a gift for graduating from undergrad and will pay for my car insurance, gas, and medical expenses until I start getting paid for my TA-ship. I have a full tuition waiver and TA-ship for graduate school, so hooray for no debt undergrad or grad. :)

Never studied abroad.

Chemistry, both in undergrad and grad.

I got my laptop during a Black Friday sale. Even so I don’t think it’s worth more than $1000. My only Apple product is an ipod, which I paid nothing for. I got a first gen ipod nano from parents for my fifteenth birthday and Apple replaced it with the latest model for free after realizing the first gen ipod nanos were a fire risk as they aged. My phone is an Android, some kind of Galaxy S.

Yes.
