how much sleep can you expect to get at caltech

Is it practically feasible to double-major/option at Caltech? (I realize this probably seems like a very na

I'm a EE frosh right now and I took EE 51 last term so that I could take it on pass/fail. I thought it saved me a lot of time to take it on pass/fail since I didn't have to worry as much about getting everything working perfectly. However, I think this is one of very few cases where it is useful. Others being perhaps Bi 8, although that's more as a pre-req to other classes, and I guess Ma 5 being the other one that you can take frosh year.

It's fairly reasonable to double major in a Hum or Social Science. Otherwise, it's close to impossible with the exception of perhaps Ma/CS.

If you're serious about being a CS major, some frosh take CS 21 (Decidability and Tractability) on pass/fail. Most definitely a nontrivial class.

But to do that, you have to test out of CS 1 and CS 2 (or you can take it concurrently with CS 2). Those are two examples of frosh year classes required for the CS major. They're pretty easy though, even if you aren't on P/F.

can i sleep for 9 hours everyday if I dont want to do anything else except for eating, studying and sleeping

arthas- Absolutely.

Unless you're taking 65+ units of extremely hard classes, you'll probably spend at least 10 hours a day eating though...

The workload is heavy, but you'll definitely have free time to do other things.

I'm a frosh, i took 48 units first term (2 PE's however) and 51 units second term (1 PE). i think i averaged between 7-8 hours of sleep on weekdays, but i think if i had put in more effort to being efficient (not like what im doing now), i could have gotten more. I also want to add that second term I was on the tennis team, and that is considerably more time than the 3 units that are allotted to it. being a sports team can really eat time. between having 2 hours practice 5-6 days a week, plus conditionining in the preseason and matches on the weekends, it can take up a lot of time. And that's assuming if you're healthy. if you're not, you have to go to the trainer before and after. aand then the sport eats up more time in the time after you're done when you just feel like speeing.

remember though, i'm on pass/fail, but i didn't do too badly in my classes either.

I'm a sophomore physics major, and I take 48-51 units each term.

I sleep about 7-8 (closer to 8) hours on average for weekdays.

I sleep about 8-10 hours on average for weekends.

I tend to work ahead on sets so that I don't have to stay up a long time the night before they're due - it works out nicely because then I am not too tired to go to lecture, and so I don't have to spend extra hours trying to teach myself everything which takes extra time, etc.

There are of course nights where I get much, much less for various reasons, but those usually aren't academic related.

Hey jars, I'm an admitted prefrosh who is interested in playing tennis at Caltech. I'm just curious, what kind of conditioning do you guys do in the preseason? Also, do players on the team tend to play every/almost every year they're at Caltech? I'm not so sure I can keep playing as I go into upper-division courses.

During the fall, players usually join the advanced tennis class and play, however it's not required. then at the beginning of second term, we have 3-4 weeks of conditioning along with practice. It was twice a week this year, but there was talk of three times a week. Depending on who leads it, it can make you want to puke or be a walk in the park. When the assistant coach leads it, its suicide after suicide or liner after liner, a whole bunch more situps (its supposed to be around 500 total, but he does them so freaking fast that I (and I suspect others) only do 50 for the basic sit up, then it dwindles down to 40, 30, 20 as we do harder variations) and a whole bunch more pushups (100 or so). Somewhere in there there is medicine ball stuff, jump rope stuff, and more pain. However, he only led conditioning twice. When the actual coach led, it was a lot of foot work drills, which if you're in decent shape (which I was since I used to run on a regular basis), doesn't end up being too bad.

I tihnk most players tend to do it every year. Right now there are 6 seniors on the team, 4 of them did it every year, one did it all but one, and the other did it frosh year and this year. There are no juniors. There are two sophomores, one of which is practically non-existent (he treats us with a guest appearance perhaps once every three weeks). And then there are four frosh. The coach is pretty flexible about missing practice if you've a hard set or stayed up late the night before. Like the non-existence sophomore apparently talked to the coach at the beginning of the season and said he'd be non-existent and the coach understands. I think most of the coaches at caltech understand that academics come first and are willing to work with you (not like they many alternatives to pick up should they kick you off).

7 hours average? That's a bit more than I get at HS.

I personally slept much less in high school than I do at Caltech - at least for weekdays.

However, I also feel that I need more sleep than I did in high school because of the higher average concentration I require when I'm awake.

Wow. Other techers get a whole lot more sleep than me. I have had numerous classes that required me to get 1-2 hours of sleep on a weekly basis. I often go a week or more without a full night's sleep. During the week, I never get more than six hours. Then, I try to make up for it on weekends. If you go to Caltech, you are going to have four years of sleep deprivation -- and you will probably lose any grip on sanity. Slashing your wrists is more fun than surviving Caltech. Come here only if you love pain.

uh.... that's pretty scary

I love it! evil smile

Do you think it was your work habits Ellen416 that caused you to get so little sleep or do most of your peers get that much sleep? I don't mean to question your integrity, but the whole bit about "slashing your wrists" and the fact that this is your first post lead me to have suspicions, although I'll admit that I like pain as much as the next guy ;-).

Bring it on! I'm ready for the sleep deprivation, my high school is...well... a lot easier, hehe.

This thread has deterred me from attending Caltech. Good luck to everyone else.

Better now than later! : ) Good luck to you.

wow, i feel guilty now, i started a thread that made somebody not want to go to caltech.....what have i done!
