How much stress do State schools put on the Personal statement.

Im trying very hard to write a great statement, but my grades are really good too.

Am I putting unnecesary pressure on myself. As long as my grades are good I shouldnt have too much trouble getting in with just an ok essay right.

Yeah if you're in state, your grades will probably be enough, but if you want scholarship money--kick ass on that essay.

Well I guess I could post my college and stats.

College - MSU
ACT- 27 (MSU average 24)
GPA-3.55 but I got a 3.0 my freshmen year so I had to get 3.8's my sophmore and junior year. (MSU average 3.55)
Top quarter
No AP's My school only offers one anyway
In state
Only EC's are hockey and work experience

I really dont like my essay so thats why I wanted to see how much I can fall back on my grades.

Bump.......................

Most state schools are very numbers driven. I don't know what the M in MSU stands for (Montana, Mississippi, Missouri, .....), but if you are in the upper 3rd of their statistical range, you'll probably get in. If not, the personal statement could be a swing factor.

Im sorry. I just figured everyone thought MSU as Michigan state university. They have a ton of Division 1 sports.

Yeah, I'm a little shocked you didn't know what MSU is...big ten??

I'm applying to MSU as well. Your grades are basically a guaranteed admission. Just apply in August or September and you'll be on your way to a spot in the school of your choice at MSU and you'll be early in the housing lottery (freshman single..)

Actually they open their application tommorow. I planned on applying at midnight lol, but I think Im going to get my essay down even more. The better it is the more money I can get in financial aid I assume.

You're not getting scholarship $$$ other than the MEAP scholarship and the MCS, which actually is still around 2800/year and with in-state tuition, it's still a bargain. But MSU only really offers OOS students and top students (basically ivy-league caliber applicants, ACT 31+ GPA 3.8+) significant scholarships.

Anyways with your stats I bet they don't even read it. You're in. It won't make much of a difference with scholarship $$$ either.
