Title says it all.
I'm literally starting today lol

like not long but had many peer reviews. I’d say like a few hours to write.

Since I didn’t apply to Cal or LA, I spent like an hour and a half on both of them.

I dont know in hours but I started two months out. I had to write three essays and had 2 english professors, 1 cc transfer counselor, 2 accepted transfer to the program i was applying to, and the uni’s transfer counselor read my prompts. I suck at that stuff so I made sure I started early.

I’ve spent around 15-20 hours on mine so far. I’m a really slow write though. I’ve completed my first draft (which I had read by a UCB grad) and now I’m working on revising it. I figure I’ll spend another 5 hours revising it tomorrow, get it reviewed again, and then submit my application.

The main reason I am taking so long is that I have several things I want to mention and it’s really difficult figuring out how best to divide them between the two prompts and the additional comments.

okay before I read that davis and SB don’t read read their personal statements, i put like 10 hours into both of mine. -_____-

But uhm, this goes out to anyone, would it still be wise to like revise my personal statements? lol

How much do personal statements weigh when applying to a school you tagged to?

Sent from my SGH-T999 using CC

If you TAG I don’t think it matters especially since many of the TAG schools may not even read them without TAG.

None of the TAG eligible schools read the personal statement (TAG and regular admission).

^ false. UCI reads the statement for regular admission.

not according to Ms. Sun

I wrote the first prompt the night before the app was due, and then finished the second the next day after class. I spent about an hour writing both, about thirty minutes editing and reviewing, and got accepted to UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCSB, and UCSD. I’m a HUGE procrastinator, so I wouldn’t recommend this for everyone, but I think it’s important not to spend too much time writhing your statements. In the end, they’ll become jumbled and confused, and you’ll miss the entire point of why the schools want you to write them. Just remember to tell them what your goals are, and what led you in that direction. Be personal, but don’t overdue it with the sob stories, and you should be fine. Don’t start them the night before, like I did, because I had no time to give it to my professor for review, but I think two months prior is a little overkill. Good luck to you all.

That was last years matrix. Try to look at this years. Stuff changes.

I’ve worked on mine off and on for about three weeks now with many revisions. Have a handful of people you trust look over it for content and grammar errors. Take advantage of drop-in sessions at your UC. I’ve had an admissions officer read my first draft and give me direct feedback. I am going for one last review before I submit.

Early October…I submitted on Nov 21. I followed Berkley’s online PS guide very carefully.

Another thing I want to add, if you get someone to review it, make sure you give them a copy of the guidelines and rules. There are some exceptions in the PS not allowed in normal essays (like using ‘I’) and some you should absolutely avoid (cliches, idioms, wordy proses etc.).

For the first prompt, I think I spent like no more than three hours on it and had it checked over by two different professors. For the second prompt, I wrote it in about twenty minutes right before I turned in the app which was right at 2 AM today, hehe.

FYI, I’m applying to Santa Barbara :-)

Yeah I probably spent 5 hours in total writing both.
I applied to UCSB (TAG), UCB, and UCLA
