How much was charged on your credit card? (UPS)

So, for whoever applied to CMU...they mailed out decisions yesterday, right? And if you had selected UPS delivery, you can probably check how much was charged to your credit card; has anyone checked? I'm totally confused, because a friend of mine got charged 90$, while another dude got charged like 20 something bucks...and mine was 60$.

i guess the price depends on 1.) whether you have been accepted or rejected. 2.) on where you live.

1) the further you live, the more they charge.
2) an acceptance packet would be heavier than the rejection letter so it would cost more.

Yeah, we live in the same city. So, the packet that cost 90 bucks is, I guess, an acceptance, and regarding the other two; I have no idea why one’s 20$ and one’s 60$…

I got charged $99.12 because I live in India. When I did a “Get Quote” on the UPS website, it said that this is the price to send a 1.76 lbs package from CMU to my city.

I’m in India too. Do you think it’d cost $60 just for a rejection letter?

Here is how you can find your decision:

https://wwwapps.ups.com/ctc/request?loc=en_US&WT.svl=SubNav

Fill in the necessary details. Put in the rejection letter weight as 0.5 lbs and acceptance package weight as 1.5 lbs. Select letter. Put in 15213 as the FROM zip code. Put in your city and country. See what is closest to what you were charged. Voila.

How is the Non- Ups post shipped??

@ Aniruddh - What does you Where am I in the Process say?

I hope none of you are future engineers or Tepper students-- b/c this sort of unscientific speculation is pathetic – .

The only secure way to see your decision is to open your mail when it arrives and/or see the decision online when posted.

I know it’s frustrating-- I know you’re tired of waiting, but you have a few more days. Carnegie students don’t guess on important decisions.

^ Nothing’s 100 % sure, but everything can be approximated using probabilities and accepted assumptions. That’s how scientists and engineers think :)

I just checked with the credit card company, and UPS didn’t charge me anything yet! :frowning:
WHY?!?!

Oh aniruddhc, thanks for the link! I calculated the costs…
64 dollars for a rejection and 90 dollars for an acceptance… I REALLY don’t want to pay 60 bucks for a rejection.

@Violator: Didn’t reflect the sending :S

Lol in which universe is this unscientific, mom2012and14? You do know that UPS charges on the basis of the weight of the package right?

@iwashere: What did they charge you? 64 or 90?

Pathetic? Are you serious?

I signed in just to post this:

It’s not pathetic. It’s brilliant. TO even consider students re-working the mail system with basic parameters and a short list of facts to find out if they got accepted or not is pretty damn innovative.

And what about students applying to CFA, MCS, SCS, and H&SS? Are you saying that this level of being “Pathetic” is ok for students applying there? But not CIT or Tepper?

What you posted was totally not constructive.

^ she probably just realized her credit card was only charged $64 ;)

@aniruddhc: They didn’t charge me anything yet… But the letters were supposed to be sent yesterday. I don’t get it! :(

I have to say, this was REALLY smart, who ever thought of it! Not pathetic at all :)

I thought of it  Thank me :D

@aniruddhc-I hope you get in just for thinking of that!!! It really is brilliant.

UPS didn’t charge me anything…what does it mean?!!!CMU haven’t mailed out my decision yet???
im nervous, cuz some said that 2nd wave=rej!!!

Check with your bank.

And thanks, flute. I did get charged $99.12 justsayin ;)

It’s unscientific b/c you don’t know what’s in the package to account for the weight.
There’s also a “deferred/waitlist” option which also has information.

You’re trying to circumvent the process and speculate. It may turn out correct, but your conclusion is still speculation and you cannot make a decision in that manner – it could be premature to celebrate or be disappointed simply b/c of the charge.

So let me ask you this-- would you be willing to pay your $800 deposit online at the NTIA based on this speculation? Of course not!

It was discovered last year that once in the NTIA link, you could only access the pay deposit with your Applicant ID if you were in fact admitted. So you could try that-- but it will cost you $800 - if you’re certain you’re attending regardless of the other admissions decisions that may be forthcoming and financial aid doesn’t matter-- heck, that is a more certain way to do it.

And to my comment about Tepper and engineering-- relative to other majors-- it was meant to focus on the disciplines that require decision making based on concrete objective facts rather than more subjective and creative criteria which is (in a positive manner) required and expected in majors such as Drama, Art, and the Humanities. These majors get to enjoy the latitude of subjectivity vs. they type of precision that engineers must abide by. A novelist can make decisions with interesting assumptions – an engineer gets to take risks and make assumptions - but not those that cannot be verified in a concrete way. Since we don’t really know what the packages weigh, this is only speculation.

My comment was not meant to offend you- so my sincere apologies-- I know it’s frustrating. Just saying, I think trying to speculate based on a UPS credit card hit is no different from trying to decipher all the entries on the Where Am I page-- it’s only speculation. And for such an important life changing decision, you just have to wait for the real deal - the actual letter in your hands. You can end up being unnecessarily disappointed based on an interesting yet flawed attempt to read the future.

Best wishes to everyone – try to get some sleep this weekend!

@mom2012and14: Whatever it is the waitlist package won’t be 1.8 lbs
