I'm a junior, and am worried I won't make the varsity tennis team come spring. For most school's teams, I'm good enough to probably be on varsity by now, but my school's is pretty competitive. There are like 80 girls total who play tennis, and 16 spots on varsity (about 12 are returning players, so 4 spots open). There are 2 JV teams, A and B. Both frosh and sophomore years I was at or near the top of the highest JV team (the two-team thing started soph year, when a huge influx of then-freshmen and other random people decided to play tennis). I'm pretty good, but haven't practiced a bunch, and I'm worried if I don't make it. It's a huge time commitment compared to JV though, and I'm wondering if it'd look just as good to be captain of the higher JV team? I'd definitely make varsity by senior year, but it's a spring sport, so I wouldn't be able to put that I lettered on my college apps. So how do you think adcoms will view either of these scenarios? I have other ECs, too, but I kinda want a varsity sport to put down...I wanna get accepted to/attend Northwestern. Thanks in advance!

Obviously being on varsity is better regarded than being on junior varsity, since you get a varsity letter. I wouldn’t see it as too much of a big deal though.

I would think a varsity sport is much more impressive, but it’s not going to be a deciding factor.

eh you can always just lie and say you were varsity captain for 4 years. theyll never know ;)

Hahaha I was wondering about that. Do you know what the consequences would be if I wrote down “lettered” next to “Tennis Team”?

They probably would never find out, but if they did, they could kick you out of the university/take back your degree. It’s very unlikely, but it would be a possibility.

I don’t think it will make a difference but you prob shouldn’t lie but they prob won’t check it cause it doesn’t really matter unless they are recruiting you. They just want to see that your committed
