Ok, so I just found out I got a 440 (8th percentile) on the Japanese SAT II. I knew I wouldn't do that well, but I at least thought I'd break 550. Anyway, this is my first SAT II (I'm a junior), and I only took it because I'm not going to be able to take Japanese next year (I'm in Japanese III right now, and it's distance learning). It's partly the fault that the Japanese class I take is distance learning, and partly the fault of me for not learning the material and cramming for tests (I still have had all A's in the class from Japanese I). I'm going to the Governor's School for Japanese this summer, so with that and some studying, I might be able to improve it next November (it's only offered in November), but I doubt by an extreme amount. I got a 1410 on the SAT in October, and am taking it again in December. I'm ranked number one in my school, have a few college courses at UVA under my belt, and my ec's are not good. I plan to get at least 700+ in all my other SAT II's, and I was planning to major in Japanese, and I still want to, but since this score is pretty damn bad I don't know how colleges will look on it.

Well, colleges want three SAT II's: 1 Writing, 1 Math, and 1 Your Choice.

For that third SAT II, you should usually pick a subject you think you can do well in. I'd say take something else, perhaps a science or history that you are good in for that third SAT II.

Oh, well I know I'm going to take at least three more, and I'm sure I'll do well on all of them, but when you send your SAT and SAT II's, don't you send all your scores?

Pocca11, I'm a junior. I live in Charlottesville. I took the test at Western Albemarle, though.

frs,
even on this board, very few people have a perfect application. Your class rank is excellent - that and a rigorous courseload is most important for admissions. You haven't sunk yourself, just put a couple of bumps in the road.

You will want to make sure you have 3 good scores - including writing - if you go with the old SAT. I think that if you learn more Japanese at Govenor's School, and are sure you can get a respectable score, it would be worth a retake if you have the time to devote to it. Again, its really time management. You could wear yourself out studying for this one test, when the same amount of time could give you fabulous scores in 3 other.

Remember, one of the things that the SAT tests is persistance. I don't if Japanese is worth going after again - but don't give up on yourself or the other tests. Best wishes to you and enjoy your T-giving holiday!
