How much will getting 7 B's affect my chances at top ivies?

I know that college admissions is a comprehensive process- especially these days- so EC's, teacher recs, essays, etc., are all taken into account in addition to your academic profile.

BUT I was just wondering- how many B's can you get? There's no "formula" or "right answer" but there kind of is, in a way.

I have the most challenging courseload, solid EC's, and hopefully, good everything else. But right now, I'm asking specifically GPA/grades question--> HOW MUCH WILL GETTING 7 B'S affect my chances at Columbia, UC Berk, UCLA?

You’ll DIE. The end. -_-

Actually, I don’t know what you mean by 7 Bs. How many classes is it out of and are they APs? When did you get those Bs? What’s your GPA overall?
I had 4 Bs between my sophomore and junior year, and I got into Harvard and Yale, so maybe that’s what you’re talking about?

If you’re a relative of the current president, your chances will not be detrimentally impacted in any way. Otherwise, you’d need to have some extraordinary ECs or test scores to compensate. Provided that you demonstrate sufficient aptitude in those two areas, as well as your application essays, you should definitely have a good shot at Berkeley and UCLA. However, I’d say that short of having done something outstanding outside of school, your chances at Columbia would be significantly diminished.

How about two B’s and C in freshman math? X_X

I would say very poorly, without any other information.

if this is 7 B’s over your high school career, I think it’s not as bad as most people on CC would make it out to be. That’s essentially averaging a B a semester. While hardly the model of perfection, it is not a dealbreaker, or even very close IMO.

Are you referring to Bs as the final grade for a particular class or just the grade for a given marking period? If it’s the latter, it’s almost inconsequential.

My daughter had 8 B’s over 4 years - Driver’s Ed, Phys. Ed, Health Ed, AP Physics. Just don’t get all of them in your JUNIOR year.

If the 7 B’s are your final averages in a particular class, then it may affect you. However, if you just got some B’s here and there throughout the semester, I don’t think it should be too bad. I don’t know how they calculate GPA and rank at your school, but at mine, they look at our FINAL averages in each class. So for me, getting a 88 one semester doesn’t matter, as long as it averages out to a 90 or above.

haha, and i was worrying about my 2 A-s

it all depends on how prestigious your school is too. i’m sure there are schools where students with b’s could easily be valedictorians at many average public schools. i personally got about 6-8 b’s since sophomore year (most of them were b+'s) and managed to get into duke, wustl, and rice. and i’m sure someone with twice as many b’s as me could have gotten into those same schools if they have killer ec’s recommendations, etc. like the op mentioned, you can’t pinpoint one specific number

I think people forget to mention that it also matters where you got the Bs at. If you received Bs at public school that doesn’t bode well for your chances. However, Bs at Exeter, Andover or Milton are considered As at public school, or at least carry more weight.

I had health issues so my final report grades for the upcoming semester will be all b’s. I’m worried because they are ALL b’s. There is no way, mathematically possible, for me to get A’s in any of the classes so they will all be B’s.

I got one B sophomore year and then junior year first semester, I had straight A’s. BUT second semester, I will, for sure, have straight B’s in ALL my classes. Again, as I had mentioned earlier, I had medical problems( which will hopefully be written in my counselor report). How will getting straight B’s affect my chances- especially since I’ve worked so hard my entire high school career and have been a straight A student( except for that pesky B+ sophomore year). How will getting straight B’s in my second semester junior year impact me at my dream schools?

I am so worried. It really makes me feel like crying all the time because I really have worked quite hard over the past couple of years( I go to a difficult private school) and now, it just seems worthless.

if u got all 7 bs in a single semester, that will hurt you a lot for sure.

I’ve also had my sights set on Columbia for so long- I visited the school twice( even though I live in California), attended the sessions/tours, talked frenetically with alumni and current students, visit the website obsessively, have my major picked out- I’ve even gone so far as to pick out what classes I would like according to the course catalogue. It’s just I’ve really had this dream for so long and it’s a perfect environment, perfect city and my parents have done everything to support this dream and now, I feel, with my flailing GPA, it won’t be achieved and I will not only have let myself down, but my parents who have sacrificed so much.( you guys don’t know how much)

Can you guys maybe share your stories- how many B’s you got, etc., so I can make a more rounded assessment?

well, not to discourage u or anything..i got 2 bs, 2 A-s, and all As in all Honors and APs (I took 9 APs total) and I was waitlisted at Columbia last yr. I ended up getting rejected from waitlist.

Scared4College: haha you sound like me. Okay, what type of health issue is it? Is it possible for you to get your guidance counselor to write a note detailing why you got those Bs. If it’s a viable reason, then colleges may overlook your low GPA. Also, it would be good if you can bring up those grades next year or take some classes at a local college and do well. I doubt it’s hopeless. Plus, ECs and good recommendations can make up for a bad semester as well. Good luck and you sound crazy like I am so I hope you get into columbia. Also, 7 Bs in one semester is like having 3.5 Bs in a year. Our school only does year-end grades but 3 or 4 Bs isn’t going to keep you out of columbia. PS, spend lots of time on your essays and make sure they know about your health issues!

haha, thanks Narcissa.

When you say bring up your grades next year/grading period( which would be senior year first semester), does that even count? I mean, I know that colleges ask for senior year grades( that mid year school report) but does that even really matter- is that matriculated into that whole college admissions process? And what if I apply ED( which I am…), so my grades aren’t even out yet.

And also, what do you mean by taking college classes? Sorry, I know that’s super ■■■■■■■■ but what type of classes should I take at my local community college? Does that even matter? Should I take it over the summer?

AND ■■■■ WHAT???!!!

DO COLLEGES LOOK AT A-'S AND A’s???

Do they ACTUALLY consider and acknowledge the difference between them??

Do B+'s mean more than B’s??

I AM SO CONFUSED!! I thought it just came down to GPA…are B+'s computed differently than B’s…,etc.,etc.,–>for Columbia and other private universities( I know different uni’s compute them diff, etc.,..but OMG…SOMEONE HELP???)
