How much will having A-s on your high school transcript affect college admissions

Hi, I am going to be a junior next year and freshman year, I got 2 A-s (Unweighted GPA: 4.0, weighted GPA: 4.0, our junior high doesn't offer aps or honors). Sophomore year, I took more challenging classes (Weighted GPA: 4.85, unweighted: 4.0) and I got two A-s first semester, 1 A- second semester. If I am A- free (I hope to be) junior year and first semester of senior year, will colleges (hypsm) look at this badly considering I have pretty good test scores/extracurriculars so far. Please respond. Gracias mucho!

If your school counts an ‘A-’ as a 4.0, then an ‘A-’ is just as good as an ‘A+’.

Saugus is 100% correct.

ok thanks im still not 100% that this is the case, because there is a big difference between 90% and 100%. To be honest, 1st semester sophomore year chem a- was a big dissappoint as well as calc bc a-. both, i know i could have gotten an a and missed it by <.5%.
do you know of anyone whos gotten into hypsm with a couple of a-s that can verify this?
im strong in both categories, was a finalist in usnco, so that should clear up chem, and i have numerous awards in math. and 5s on both ap tests… im just not really into the nit picky grades sorta thing.

Yes, one A- automatically sends you to a community college. I’m sorry.

“im just not really into the nit picky grades sorta thing”
You are worried about a A-… hmm.

Relax. You are only a incoming junior. You already took AP CALC BC as a sophomore, which is pretty impressive.

People get into HYPSM with B’s. How? Well, there’s more to an application then just grades.

If your school reports just letter grades, they most likely don’t even send the + or the - to the colleges, and frankly, I don’t think the colleges care at all.
And I think for most people, the difference between an A- and an A+ is more of a pride or accomplishment sort of thing. Not to impress colleges.

on a GPA scale from 0-4. and i really wouldn’t like to resort to luck on college admissions. im trying my best to successfully advertise myself to colleges.

No matter what, luck will be a factor.

Focus on scoring high on your standardized tests. Make a difference with your EC’s. Be committed. Read these forums.

People will probably blast you for posting a post like this… CC doesn’t usually like these types of posts.
Good luck.

yes, people will probably blast me for doing this, but i do appreciate honest opinions on this because i am concerned. i will take your advice, gracias. more posts on this thread would be appreciated!

where am I? Seriously. Also, I hope OP doesn’t take Spanish. Otherwise (s)he doesn’t deserve a 4.0.

For each “-,” they kill one member of your family. Once they run out of members and pets, you get rejected.

I hope you have lots of siblings.

Stanford’s admissions office has explicitly stated on more than one occasion that when they recalculate GPA’s, they consider all A’s, regardless of the +/-, as 4.0’s. I don’t think HYP and other Ivies would be too different. After all, think about it – with the number of applicants they receive every year, they would rather NOT do so much number crunching ;)

Listen to Saugus. He has the right of it.

Alright thanks a lot. im more convinced now. consider this thread done! =)
