HELLO! :)
I am graduating in a couple days and my family and I were thinking about getting a head start on buying things that I'll need for college and for my dorm. After doing some searching, I realized that there is a LOT to bring to college. Do any of you students already in college have an estimate of how much I'll end up spending? I'm seeing a LOT of items that I'll need. We were thinking about doing most of the shopping at Bed, Bath and Beyond. If anyone has any other suggestions of places to go to it'd be much appreciated! Thank you!

I would give Target and/or Wal-Mart a shot. They usually have really cheap stuff (price-wise – I don’t mean to imply that the quality is bad).

When do you leave for college? For me, fall quarter doesn’t start until late September. It stinks for hanging out with high school friends, but it’s great for buying dorm stuff. Since the big rush for buying dorm stuff was over by the time we went shopping (we waited until about a week before I had to leave), EVERYTHING was on sale and we got really good deals. I don’t remember the exact total we spent, but it was probably much less than it would have been if we had gone earlier. So if you go to one of those schools that starts really late, you might want to wait to go shopping.

Sorry for the long post - just one more thing. How far away you live is another thing to consider. If you have to fly to your college, you might be better off only buying a few things now and then buying the rest once you get to college. Just something to consider.

Good luck!

Another nice thing about BBB, in addition to their coupons that never expire, is that you can order the things you want from the BBB near your home and they will hold your order at the BBB near your college. This way, you don’t have to transport everything - just pick it all up when you move in.

If you happen to change your mind about something you had ordered when you pick up your items…no problem. You are not obligated to buy everything you ordered.

In addition to BBB, my D found a lot of things at the Container Store. They have special invitation only events (just need to register online) for college students mid summer. Last week, the sales clerk told us if we came during an event, our entire order would get a 20% discount.

what’s BBB?

Bed, Bath and Beyond. It has a Web site if you do not have one nearby.

We got a lot of stuff at target and meijer. We probably spent over a thousand dollars, but that was because I had NOTHING from home that I could bring with me besides my computer.

over a thousand? OUCH! time to get a summer job…
yeah, i think wal-mart and BBB is the way to go…i’ll have to search for coupons and the like.

As DD and her suite mates were moving out, they all agreed that they had brought too much stuff. I know my daughter did. Her roommate estimated that she didn’t use 40 percent of the things she brought. I have no idea how to figure out what you really have to have.

I probably spent about 300 or so at Walmart, Target, etc.

target>walmart for college dorms

I also question about the budget. My biggest concern was buying a refrig. but I no longer have to worry about that. I guess now it’s back to searching for the right laptop.

Oh, my sibilng got most of their stuff from BBB and Target.

I might have spent $200-$300 on dorm stuff, mostly for bedding.

I flew to college and didn’t bring much besides clothing, but there also wasn’t very much that I needed to get: a bed-in-a-bag, a mattress pad, a fan, a desk lamp, trash cans, cloth hangers, a laundry hamper, an ethernet cord, a shower caddy, a few other small things.

Well, I also got a laptop computer and academic supplies and a ton of toiletries that I couldn’t bring with me. I spent about a thousand dollars in total (including the $200-$300 from above) to get started.

yea apparently Target is the place to go for all of your college needs lol.

I had much better luck at walmart than target, but in general I would go to target before walmart.

I would say that I spent around $250-300 but there was still a lot of stuff that I wanted that I wasn’t able to get. This doesn’t include a laptop and tv…which cost me about $1200 altogether.

over 9000!

What!? Nine thousand!

lol thats a joke, maybe 300$ to 400$, you already have a tv and what not

C’mon people… learn your memes.

What I said was Nappa’s response. :(
