How much will legacy help for Emory University

I recently applied ED to Emory with legacy. I have a 4.2/4.5 GPA and a 2030 SAT (610 reading, 700 math, 720 writing) I also have a 700 Math 1 sat 2. My recommendations are amazing as are my essays. I also have amazing extracurriculars (will comment if people think knowing the exact activities will help their response) My worry is that while I feel i may be qualified, there are also 5 other people applying ED (2 girls, 3 guys). So do you think that legacy will help me stand out? I can definitely say that I think i am among the more qualified of those who are applying ED from my school. Thanks

I’m not sure what you mean when you say there are 5 other people applying ED, do you mean at your school?

To answer your question, I don’t think legacy will make too big of an impact on your admissions decision. I think the fact that you applied ED will be much more significant than your legacy considering the amount of students enrolled through early decision, that being said I’m sure it can’t hurt to be a legacy. Good luck on Dec 15 we might be in the same class (I did ED as well chance me back!).

seems like you’ve got a pretty good shot, i know legacy might not be a huge help overall, but do you think it might help in comparison with some of my fellow classmates who have applied ED as well. Also, it seems like you have some great leadership, which i know really stands out. This past summer I interned at the legislature for the county I live in and aided in the writing process for a bill. Do you think that this will really stand out and possibly make up for my lacking GPA? I also got a stellar recommendation from my boss. Thanks again, hopefully we will both be Emory Eagles one day. Message me if you get in!

Sure thing! As far as leadership goes I think that helping write a bill for your county is pretty unique and that should stand out, especially if it correlates with your desired major (law/ political science?). And when you say you have a lacking gpa I really doubt that a 4.2 can be considered lacking as long as your unweighted is somewhere in the 3.7-4.0 area (plus rigor is a factor of course so give or take a few points). Do I think one activity can make up for a less than stellar gpa, usually not, but I’d say your most likely not in the position where you need to make up for it anyway. As far as legacy considerations in the admissions process, I think that if you were to compare two very similar applicants in the same applicant pool but one had legacy I think they’d consider legacy as more of a tie breaker than anything else. Just out of curiosity did you apply ED to both Oxford and Emory or just one of the two? And yeah I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes when decisions come around!

Scotty, my d1 applied early decision 1 to Emory last year and was accepted. If you would like to know her stats, please PM me. I am interested in the extracurricular activities you have because you indicate that they are strong. *My d1 wrote her essay about her involvement in an extracurricular activity. *Also, can you give me an idea of the general academic standing of the other peers applying early decision from your HS. At my d’s school, only 3 out of 7 got in last year ED so I am not sure how many will get in from your school. *In addition can you tell me what your senior year schedule looks like and if you plan to submit first trimester/quarter grades? I really hope I can be of some help in this process!!! :)
