Hi. Currently, I am a freshmen in high school and I am currently finishing out the year. At this point in the year, my gpa is a 3.3, which I understand is not good. What I’m here for is asking whether this gpa will hold me back from getting into my dream school of Penn State, and doing an engineering course. With this all in mind, do you guys have any suggestions on what to do to increase my chances of getting in? Thanks a bunch in advance
It will not hurt you unless your GPA at the end of your junior year is also 3.3.
GPA is 2/3 of the decision at Penn State. You can see the most recent breakdown for freshmen at main campus in section C11 at https://budget.psu.edu/CDSRedesign/cds.aspx?reportindicator=FreshAdmn&Location=UP&AY=20172018
Engineering is also one of the more competitive schools, so I would focus on continuing to bring up your GPA over time. Good luck! You have a solid start.
No if you show improvement through your years in HS. Colleges want to see that you are increasingly doing better and do understand that freshmen yr is a transition year. As long as you finish strong, it will not be a negative impact on you, but will show the college that you are growing, learning, and maturing. It is good that you acknowledge that a 3.3 is not the best, but you have time to turn it around! Just study, work hard, and aim for that 4.0 in your coming years (along with taking AP/IBs)
