how much impact do grades on classes such as art, gym, journalism, etc have?

Well, tell us the specific situation.

Nothing. They delete from your overall grades and recalculate. If you are considering any of these as a major, will be taken in great consideration. Otherwise, they just regonfigure your grades and look at honors classes, AP, etc.

well im a junior and my gpa is 3.6 uw and 4.5 w, im editor of my hs paper, im in math honor society and odyssey of the mind, and im taking 3 ap classes this yr and next, but i dunno what the impact of me getting a c in one semester of art and b's gym compared to others who have aced those classes will have?

Colleges will take your grades and will recalculate. They know you are required to take these partial credit courses - I presume they are - and basically ignore them. May be different with journalism - just continue to improve. My son had a B in Art his freshman year - lsst year required. Brought his GPA down. Again, they just recalculate and look at highest courses taken to do well in college - most challenging courses offered - how well you did in those amd how it matches to your college app. Hope this helps.
