I got a 2130 on my SAT (660 CR / 800 M / 670 W). I've also gotten 800 Biology / 770 Math II / 770 Chem on my subject tests. I'm applying to CIT RD and I want to study physics/engineering. My grades, however, aren't spectacular; I'm in the top 15% of a competitive class of about 340 or so people and my unweighted GPA is about a 3.7. Considering that my essays, ECs and recs should be good, will this low GPA/rank keep me out? Also, how much are the CR/W sections looked at for the engineering program?

this shouldnt really hurt you. if you’re applying for engineering, colleges mainly look at your math scores/science, so i think you’ll be fine there. class rank wise…im not really sure. your GPA is good, it just really depends on your workload. as long as your essays “WOW!” them, and you have REALLY good recs and EC’s, you should be fine. I think you’ll get in :). Good luck!

for some reason, i think 2130 is around the median score for CMU. so it shouldnt hurt you.

Well, I got in to SCS (this year, ED) which is at least statistics-wise a harder school to get in to. I had better test scores, but my grades were “much” worse, a 3.45 unweighted at a similarly competitive school. I had the recs and the essay I needed, and although I don’t know for sure, I think those got me in.

So, assuming that you’re taking hard classes, that GPA isn’t really a downer. If so, I’d say you’re in. Good luck!

cry. why do u say 3.7 is a bad GPA? u have pre-senioritis freakout panick attack. relax. not everybody here had 4.0 in high school.

considering that GPA landed me outside the top 10%, I can’t exactly say it’s that good :/
