Hi! I am either planning to go to a UC this coming year or in 2 years as a transfer. I plan to go to UCSB, UCB, or UCSD or UCD. I know these colleges are ~30,000 a year. Does that include housing/living expenses I'm not sure? My mother is divorced and makes 19,000$ a yr. So my EFC is 0. Given these facts, how much will my fafsa offer me ? will this money be free/grant money or will it be in the form of loans I will have to pay back? Will it cover all expenses? I will need to be able to afford housing/book/living expenses with this money. Thank you any helpful info welcome !

FAFSA is a financial aid application form. FAFSA does NOT give you money. If your EFC is $0 you are entitled to the full Pell grant of about $5600. You would also be entitled to $7500 (as a third year student) in Direct Loans.

Does your mom get child support or spousal support? Of so, those also need to be included on your FAFSA.

If you are a CA resident, and graduated from a CA high school, have you learned about the Calgrant? I’m not an expert at all on these, but the vast majority of need based aid for CA residents comes in the form of the Calgrant. Someone else will chime in on the specifics, I’m sure.

If you are not a CA resident, you will probably NOT get sufficient aid to attend a CA public university.

Use the **Net Price Calculator/b on each campus’ web site to find out.

With a FAFSA EFC = $0 as a California resident, the UCs will usually expect only that you take federal direct loans ($5,500) and contribute a few thousand dollars of work earnings, with everything else covered by grants. This is usually about $8,500 to $10,000 per year.
