How much writing should you do with passages?

I see a lot of books say to get the main idea, highlight, take notes, etc. Is highlighting heavily recommended(just simple underlining)? What about writing the main idea next to the passage? I don't want to make myself feel like I"m just reading to highlight, but it might make you pay a little more attention. What do you guys think?

I like to write a succinct few words to summarize each paragraph as I read it. If you do this, incorporate it into your reading rather than making it an extra step, if that makes any sense.

I don't write much in the margins. I'm a slow writer, and I can't always read my own scribbles. Instead, I underline and circle words and phrases.

But first, before reading the passage, I glance at the questions (NOT the answer choices!). That way, I have some I idea what I'm looking for when I read the passage.

Also, I do mark the line references. If I see that a question is about lines 13-14, I'll mark that down in the passage so I won't forget, and if I have to go back and forth between the question and the passage, I won't lose my place in the passage.

Hope this helps.

oh i don't write at all lol...i do cross out wrong answers, make marks, etc. in the questions section tho
