How necessary are activity-lists/resumes?

I am fairly sure that resumes would count as "supplementary materials" that are "optional," but how many people submit these items? What purpose do these resumes fulfill that the rest of the application does not? Is it actually important that this purpose be fulfilled?

Sorry, I've been hearing so much about these activity lists that I'm getting a bit nervous and possibly thinking of making one myself. How beneficial or necessary are these things?

I don't have one.

I only filled in the Common App activity list and that was it.

I seem to be hearing about people making lists/tables of activities along with brief descriptions of each. How would that work on the Common App?

It really doesn't - and thus the activity lists/resume. i have one, bc i have more stuff than the six lines allow, but also bc a lot of summer programs - such as gov school - ask for them.

I got into Harvard without one. Some might say that I was just too sleepy and lazy in the early morning of Nov. 1st to make one, haha... but maybe I came across as more real because I didn't try to puff up my extracurriculars so much?

When I did the common app I filled out the activity list and then added stuff that wouldn't fit, and also explained a bit about some of my activities, such as work experience and volunteer work because it was a little more complicated than just "how many hours per week." Some colleges suggest a resume, some don't care. When in doubt, e-mail your admissions rep.

Personally I prefer a concise resume stating the activity, years of involvement, and any honors/awards.

And a short (many one sentence) explanation for any activity that is not obvious.

I don't have a great number of activities, but I'm heavily involved in each one. An activity list wouldn't really help to explain my involvement, would it?

My only unclear activities are explained in my "most meaningful activity" essay, and likely in my rec letters.
