How necessary is having a car in years 2-4 at UAH?

Just trying to figure out living expenses for years 2-4 at UAH should my son choose to go there.

My son is only a freshman and he’s been fine without one. Two of his roommates have cars and the other two do not. He will take the bus when he wants to get around town or needs to go to the grocery. His bike is fine for campus. I would say it is doable, but depends on the student.

Thank you, @PinewoodCC !

My son (a sophomore) has a car and certainly appreciates it. He often has evening classes and appreciates not having to walk back in the dark. But - so far it has been a nice-to-have, not a need. They do not have enough dorm space to guarantee on campus living to Jr’s and Sr’s so it is likely he will NEED (or at least REALLY want) one once he moves off campus. The cost of on-campus parking is $120 per year.

Thanks, @jk2tka3 . That is helpful. Do you happen to know if there are shuttles to and from off-campus apartments like there are at UA?

Unfortunately, there are no shuttles to and from off campus apartments. So a car will be needed if living elsewhere. My son has a car (he is in his third year), and it has been a blessing. He had some doctor’s appointments off campus, so he had a way to get there. He also likes to go to the grocery stores, as he does like to cook.

Okay, thank you @momreads , that is good to know.
